UNL's baseball team will be an improvement to the lowly Big Ten baseball programs. It's so bad in the Big Ten that conference commissioner Jim Delaney wants an exception for an underserving northern team to get a pass into the college world series since the northern programs are too bad to win the right on the field. Maybe UNL will help raise the Big Ten baseball bar a bit? One of the Big Ten schools doesn't even field a baseball team.

Florida plays 19 of it's first 22 games AT HOME. (And the 3 games that AREN'T at home are still in FL, at Miami.) Michigan plays it's first 20 games on the road - mostly in FL, 4 games in Baton Rouge - before finally opening the home season on March 23. Even then there's a good chance the games could be postponed due to cold or snow.

But, surely you aren't in favor of some kind of affirmative action program for college baseball?

Nebraska starts out with 10 road games before coming home to play in early March. We usually start out in tournaments or neutral site games in California and Texas, then go to the Dome in Minnesota. This weekend we play West Virginia, New Mexico St, and Minnesota up there. With state of the art facilities and a former NU football and baseball player having a 14 year MLB career as head coach, hopefully the program will return to form. As to Delany, I have nothing bad to say. he's a big improvement over our last conference and its commissioner.

But, so does the Big 12. And so does Texas. And most certainly, so does OU. A bad deal all the way around.

It was a complcated thing. NU had off and on tried to get into the Big 10 since the early 1920's. The rise of the NU vs. OU rivalry likely put all that off for some time. The advent of the Big 12 with the end of NU vs. OU as one of the big rivalries in all of sports as OSU vs. UM is and the oversized power given to the Texas 4 by themselves and by other big 8 members at the beginning and onward, began the proocess of separation. The other Big 8 teamms were so interested in diluting NU's perceived power in the 1990's that they simply pushed NU out of the conference with the final events that have been covered from 2010. Leaving (at least for the Big or Pac 10) became a better option than staying for NU.

Huskers blast Gophers, 10-3
Pritchard
Lemke
Stock
Minneapolis — The Nebraska baseball team (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten) ended its trip to the Metrodome on Sunday afternoon with a 10-3 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Dairy Queen Classic. Three Huskers earned all-tournament honors, including Richard Stock at first base, Austin Darby in the outfield and Michael Pritchard at designated hitter. Pritchard also earned the tournament's Silver Stick Award as the weekend's most valuable hitter. The sophomore was 5-for-8 on the weekend with one double, three RBIs and four runs scored. On Sunday, Pritchard was 3-for-4 with a career-high three RBIs and three runs scored. Stock and Blake Headley also had multiple hits on the afternoon with two each and each drove in a run. NU starter Tom Lemke gave the Huskers five solid innings and earned his first win of 2012 in his second start of the season. The 6-8 righty gave up one run on four hits and struck out two. The NU bullpen then took over and gave up two runs on three hits over the final four innings. After scoring a combined seven runs through the first two games of the Dairy Queen Classic, the Husker offense exploded for seven runs in the first four frames against the Gophers, including three runs in the top of the second inning. After playing their first 10 games of the season away from the Lincoln, the Huskers will hold their home opener on Tuesday afternoon against the Kansas State Wildcats at 2:05 p.m. The game with the Wildcats is the first of 17 straight home games at Hawks Field, as Nebraska will also play Nebraska-Kearney, California, South Dakota State, Louisiana Tech, Northern Colorado and Illinois. Nebraska's opening Big Ten series, against Illinois, starts Friday, March 23, at 6:35 p.m.

But, surely you aren't in favor of some kind of affirmative action program for college baseball? what i'm in favor of is starting the baseball season at a time of year where EVERY college team has the ability to play home games. allowing schools to begin their season in february is absolutely ludicrous. it forces big 10 and other conferences to put their teams on the road for a month just so they can be less behind once late march comes around and there's a chance to play home games in suitable weather. there is absolutely no reason why college baseball can't start in april and have it's world series in july or august. that's nor affirmative action. that's common sense in terms of a level and dry playing field. mark scott tosu 81
