UF beat Vandy 1-0 to increase the SEC East lead to 5 games and the overall SEC lead to 3 1/2 games with 5 games to play (2 against Vandy and 3 at UT). The Gators have won 12 SEC games in a row which is a new UF record:

Through this record-setting SEC winning streak, there has been a common thread for the Florida Gators, a combination of strong pitching, sound defense and timely hitting.
The timely hitting wasn't exactly there Thursday night, but the strong pitching and sound defense certainly were in a 1-0 win over No. 18 Vanderbilt at McKethan Stadium that extends the No. 4 Gators' school-record SEC winning streak to 12 games.
UF (34-16 overall and 19-6 in the SEC) increases its overall lead in the SEC standings to three-and-a-half games over Ole Miss and to five games over Eastern Division rival Vanderbilt (36-14 and 14-11), with only five conference games remaining for the Gators.
Once again, UF got a strong performance on the mound from its starter and the bullpen.
Freshman standout right-hander Logan Shore (7-2) was almost unhittable, giving up only two singles, walking only two and striking out a career-high eight in 7.1 innings of work.
Bobby Poyner came in with one out in the eighth and saved the win, retiring the final five Vandy hitters in order.
The Gators gave Shore the early lead, scoring on a run in the first on a two-out single by catcher Taylor Gushue that drove home Richie Martin, who walked earlier in the inning.
But UF had problems trying to build the lead against Vanderbilt ace Tyler Beede, who worked out of jams in the third and sixth innings to keep it a 1-0 game heading into the seventh inning.
In the third, the Gators had runners on second and third with only one out, but Beede struck out Zack Powers and Pete Alonso to end the threat.
In the sixth, Alonso led off with a walk, then Buddy Reed followed an out later with a double that put two runners in scoring position again with only one out.
But No. 9 hitter John Sternagel hit a weak grounder to first that Alonso tried to score on, but he was caught in a rundown and tagged out. Casey Turgeon followed with a flyout to right that ended the inning.
Through six innings, UF had left nine runners on base.
Beede was pulled after the sixth inning and replaced with junior right-hander Adam Ravenelle, who worked out of a potential problem when he struck out Alonso to end the seventh with runners on first and second, following back-to-back walks with two outs.
If the Gators were frustrated by their failure to put the game away, it didn't show, especially in Shore's performance. He was in command and never seriously threatened by the Commodores, who managed only two singles against him through his 7.1 innings of work.
Shore was backed up by a strong defensive performance by the Gators, who were error free.
UF managed only three hits and left 12 runners on base.

For those who like high scoring games, this isn't the series to watch with 1-0 UF and 3-0 Vandy. The rubber game is today at noon EST televised on Sun Sports Florida. I'm not surprised the series has come down to a rubber game as Vandy came in as the hottest overall team in the SEC.

Tough series loss. I realize Vandy is a pretty good ball club. But only scoring 3 runs in the series, with 2 coming in one game after being down 16-0 has to get ya a little nervous. Only had 12 hits all series too....with 8 of them coming in that last game.
UF has outstanding pitching though...that's probably enough to get them to a super.

Only had 12 hits all series too....with 8 of them coming in that last game. UF has outstanding pitching though...that's probably enough to get them to a super. On top of those 14 hits by Vandy, UF pitchers gave up 10 walks! It doesn't help to have our middle game weekend starter injured just as he had won the position and gained an SEC weekly award. I'm also beginning to wonder if yesterdays starter, Karsten Whitson, will ever be right again. It's sad for him as he was once a promising MLB pitching prospect. The offense has been a concern to me all year. When UF isn't hitting, the team can go from very good to mediocre. The defense also had a few errors yesterday. When UF plays error free, they almost always win. When you add it up, there are lots of concerns. However, this young team has been able to pull together enough very good performances to go 19-8 in SEC play. Win one game at UT next weekend and UF will be guaranteed no worse than a tie for the SEC championship based on the games played through Saturday. That's impressive with all of the good teams in the SEC. The mid-week losses have been more concerning to me more than anything that has happened in SEC play, including 17-1 at UK and 16-2 at home to Vandy yesterday. It tells me they aren't ready to bring their best game everyday. That is hugely concerning for the upcoming lose two and you're done tourneys. I don't know how UF will do in the SEC and NCAA tourneys. It depends on which Gator team shows up, the very good one or the mediocre one.

Shows what the SEC baseball coaches don't know about their fellow teams - 2014 SEC preseason baseball predictions:
League Coaches Narrowly Select South Carolina To Win 2014 SEC Baseball Crown
Updated 2/11/2014
The South Carolina Gamecocks are predicted to win the 2014 Southeastern Conference baseball championship by a slim one-vote margin, as voted by the league’s 14 baseball coaches in the 23rd annual preseason SEC poll.
The Gamecocks, ranked No. 14 nationally in the preseason USA Today Coaches’ Poll, seek to capture their fourth SEC Championship. LSU and Mississippi State, ranked second and fourth in the USA Today poll respectively, received four votes each in the overall vote.
LSU has 15 SEC Championships in its program’s history, while Mississippi State has 10, the last of which came in 1989. Vanderbilt also received one vote to win the league title.
Since 1996, the SEC has named a regular season champion as well as a tournament champion. Prior to 1996, the tournament champion was considered the SEC Champion.
In addition to picking a preseason SEC champion, the league’s head coaches voted a predicted order of finish in the SEC Eastern and Western Divisions. In the Western Division, LSU was the narrow favorite with 84 of a possible 91 points. Mississippi State came in second with 83 points, with Alabama and Texas A&M tied at third with 58. South Carolina received 86 points in the Eastern Division. Vanderbilt was second with 82, while Florida finished third with 69.
Points were compiled on a 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division. Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.
The 2014 SEC regular season begins Friday, February 14, with conference play set to begin Friday, March 14. The SEC Tournament will be played at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium in Hoover, Ala., May 20-25. The 2013 SEC Baseball Tournament drew over 134,000 fans, a new record-high for the event. Eight times in the last 11 years the tournament has surpassed the six-digit mark in total attendance.
Eastern Division Team -- Pts. 1. South Carolina (9) -- 86 2. Vanderbilt (5) -- 82 3. Florida -- 69 4. Kentucky -- 47 5. Tennessee -- 39 6. Georgia -- 38 7. Missouri -- 24

Maybe the Florida Gators have found a way to get past these frustrating midweek games to non-conference opponents without getting beat.
Play an opponent with self-destructive tendencies that beats itself.
Benefiting from all kinds of sloppy pitching and play from the South Florida Bulls, the No. 8 Gators (35-18) breezed to an 8-2 victory Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium. USF fell to 25-27.
Harrison Bader had a three-run triple in a five-run fifth inning and the UF bullpen shut down the Bulls over the final seven innings.
The Gators now will shift their focus on trying to clinch the SEC title this weekend in Knoxville, where they end the regular season with a three-game series against the Vols.
Heading into the final weekend, UF (19-8 in league play) has a two-game lead over Ole Miss in the overall SEC standings and a three-game lead over Vanderbilt and South Carolina in the Eastern Division.
Ole Miss plays a three-game series at Texas A&M this weekend, while Vandy and USC faceoff for three games in Nashville.

The Florida Gators - 2014 SEC Baseball Champion!
UF beat UT 6-5 in 11 innings. With the win, UF nailed down the SEC East and won at least a share of the 2014 SEC championship. Ole Miss won 8-4 at aTm and is the only team that can tie UF with two SEC games to play. A UF win at UT or an Ole Miss loss at aTm will give UF the outright SEC championship:

UF's record advanced to 36-18 (20-8).

Thursday May 15, 2014 No. 13 Florida Baseball Clinches Share of SEC Title With 6-5 Win At Tennessee In 11 Innings Knoxville, Tenn.
The Gators celebrated gaining at least a share of the SEC Championship on Thursday. With a 6-5 victory over Tennessee in 11 innings, Florida clinched at least a share of the program’s 13th SEC Championship and secured the team’s 22nd Eastern Division title on Thursday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
No. 13 Florida (36-18/20-8 SEC) tied the game on a two-out double by sophomore Harrison Bader in the ninth inning and Bader scored the go-ahead run with two down in the 11th frame after stealing second and advancing around the bases on a pair of errors by Tennessee (30-21/11-17 SEC). The Gators need one more win or a loss by Ole Miss at Texas A&M this weekend to claim the league crown outright.
With the Vols holding a 5-4 lead in the ninth and two down, the Gators tied the game on an RBI double to right field by Bader (3-for-5) that brought junior Casey Turgeon (2-for-6) home. Turgeon had singled with one out off of sophomore Andrew Lee (4-4) and moved to second on a grounder by sophomore Richie Martin. Bader then delivered his fourth double of the year to plate the tying run.
In the 11th, Bader had a one-out single into left field and Lee had junior Taylor Gushue pop up for the second out. Bader was successful on his third theft of the game and the relay throw went into center field, where it was misplayed, enabling Bader to score what proved to be the winning run. Freshman Kirby Snead recorded the final three outs to collect his first save and preserve the win for junior Ryan Harris (3-1).
Tennessee had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI double by freshman Nick Senzel that scored sophomore Christin Stewart (2-for-6), who had singled with two down against freshman Logan Shore.
Freshman Peter Alonso (2-for-5) gave the Gators a 3-1 advantage in the second inning with a three-run homer to left field after back-to-back singles by juniors Braden Mattson (1-for-5, two runs) and Zack Powers (2-for-5). It was his fourth big fly of the season.
Mattson drew a two-out walk in the fifth from freshman Hunter Martin and Powers expanded the Gators’ lead to 4-1 with a double off of the wall in right field.
Senior Taylor Smart (2-for-5) tied the game in the sixth with a three-run homer with two down. Sophomores Vincent Jackson and Derek Lance (2-for-5) started the inning with consecutive singles and were sacrificed into scoring position on a bunt by sophomore A.J. Simcox. Sophomore Eric Hanhold replaced Shore (5.1 IP, 8 H, 3 R) and struck out sophomore David Houser (2-for-4) before surrendering the round-tripper by Smart to left field that evened the score.
The Vols seized a 5-4 advantage in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Maddox that scored junior pinch runner Johnny Youngblood. Houser singled with one down and was replaced by Youngblood before Price singled for runners on the corners. Maddox blooped a base-hit into center field to move the hosts in front.
Postgame Quotes
Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan
On gaining at least a share of the SEC Championship:
“I’m really proud of what we were able to accomplish. Anytime you win 20 games in the best league in the country, it says a lot about how hard your kids have worked throughout the season. There’s been no quit in this team throughout the year and they always seem to find a way to get a W. At times, it’s not the prettiest in the world, but, in the end, a win’s a win.”
On the Gators’ pitching performance:
“Logan (Shore) gave us another solid start. (Bobby) Poyner came in and got some really big outs to keep us in the game and you can’t say enough about Kirby Snead – he’s a freshman that has been doing a great job for us and he had to face the top of the order to close things out.”
Game Notes
· Florida gained at least a share of its 13th SEC Championship, first since 2011. Kevin O’Sullivan’s three titles (2010-11-14) match Dave Fuller (1948-75) for the most in school history.
· UF has 20 victories in conference action for the eighth time – 1988-96-98-2002-05-10-11-14 – and has captured the SEC Championship on seven occasions when that has happened (all except 2002).
· The Gators have now won the Eastern Division four times in O’Sullivan’s seven years at the helm (2009-10-11-14). Jay Bergman (1976-81) holds UF’s record with five East crowns (1977-81).
· Florida’s total of 22 divisional titles is the most in the league, while LSU is second with 17.
· The Gators improved to 15-6 in one-run games this season and are now 7-2 in extra-inning contests.
· Florida notched its 15th come-from-behind win of the campaign and had been 2-17 when trailing after eight innings.
· Logan Shore’s span of 14 straight scoreless innings ended on a two-out double in the first inning.
· All four of Peter Alonso’s homers have come in SEC play and he has driven in a team-leading 23 runs in league games.
· Harrison Bader was 3-for-5 and stole three bases in three opportunities.
· With Kirby Snead’s first career save, eight different Gator pitchers have accounted for the team’s 19 saves.
· Taylor Gushue was 1-for-3 with three walks and UF drew eight free passes on the night.

Friday May 16, 2014 No. 13 Florida Baseball Claims Outright SEC Championship With 4-2 Victory Over Tennessee Knoxville, Tenn.
Josh Tobias came through with a clutch two-run single as a pinch hitter in the 8th for the Gators.
Florida secured the outright SEC Championship and clinched its weekend series with a 4-2 win over Tennessee on Friday night at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Holding a 2-1 lead in the eighth inning, the No. 13 Gators (37-18/21-8 SEC) received a two-run, pinch-hit single by junior Josh Tobias with the bases loaded and two down for some breathing room. Although the Vols (30-22/11-18) trimmed the deficit to 4-2 in the home part of the frame, freshman Kirby Snead (2.1 IP, 3 H, 1 R) pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save in as many nights.
Freshman A.J. Puk (5-2) pitched five innings of one-run ball to earn his fourth win in SEC play, while junior Taylor Gushue was 3-for-4 with two doubles. The Gators have captured their last six series against Tennessee and extended their road winning streak to eight games, second-longest in school history (record of nine set in 1922).
Gushue plated junior Casey Turgeon with a two-out double in the first inning to open the scoring against senior Nick Williams (5-5). Turgeon had opened the game with a double down the left-field line and was sacrificed over by sophomore Richie Martin before Gushue’s team-leading 14th two-bagger and 43rd RBI.
Senior Taylor Smart (2-for-4) tied the game for the Vols with a leadoff homer in the second that hit the foul pole overlooking left field. It was his second of the series and fourth round-tripper of the year.
The Gators seized a 2-1 advantage in the sixth on an RBI grounder by junior Zack Powers. Sophomore Harrison Bader walked and Gushue singled and each advanced into scoring position on a bunt by junior Braden Mattson. Powers’ ground ball to second base brought Bader home.
Tennessee threatened by putting two runners aboard in the seventh but was foiled by an inning-ending strikeout by Snead. Junior Justin Shafer (1.2 IP) registered the first two outs of the stanza before yielding an infield single to sophomore Derek Lance. After Snead entered and issued a walk to Maddox, the lefty caught sophomore Christin Stewart looking on a full count to complete the frame.
Tobias delivered a pinch-hit, two-run single with the bases full in the eighth to give the Gators a 4-1 edge. Gushue led off with a double and was sacrificed to third by freshman pinch hitter Ryan Larson. An error on the play enabled UF to have two runners aboard. A fielder’s choice by Powers erased Larson, freshman Peter Alonso walked and Powers was called for interference on a fielder’s choice by freshman Buddy Reed for two down. Tobias stepped to the plate and sliced a base-hit through the left side that scored Gushue and Alonso.
Sophomore A.J. Simcox brought the Vols within 4-2 in the home part of the inning with a two-out single that plated sophomore Vincent Jackson.
Postgame Quotes
Head coach Kevin O’Sullivan
On tonight’s Gator victory:
“I was really proud of the guys for responding the way that they did tonight. We talked before the game about the importance of coming out and playing hard and we got some clutch hits, timely pitching and great defense throughout the game. We didn’t want to share the title with anyone and the kids can now say that they are outright SEC Champions.”
On Florida’s pitching performance:
“A.J. gave us a great start – his fastball had a lot of life tonight and I love to see the progress of him going a career-best five innings. (Justin) Shafer bridged the gap and we went to Kirby (Snead) again and he did a really good job of closing out the game. It’s great to see the young guys grow every time they step on the mound and I like the way we are pitching as we wind down the grind of the regular season.”
Game Notes
· Florida’s total of 21 wins in SEC play is one shy of the school record, as the Gators were 22-8 in both 2010 and 2011.
· UF improved to 9-5 in league road games after going 12-3 at McKethan Stadium.
