Huge, first time ever for UF in any sport, home weekend for women's tennis:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – This weekend, the Florida women's tennis team will do something that no other Gator team – in any sport – has ever done. That's saying a lot considering the amazingly talented and historic events Florida athletics has experienced. First on Saturday, February 18 and then on Sunday, February 19, the Gators will play host to the previous season's national finalists. Back to back days. Less than 24 hours apart. Gator lacrosse has played the two finalists from the previous year during a season, however, never at home and never on consecutive days. Not to mention the Gator's home win streak. Florida has won 161 consecutive home matches. It is the longest active home win streak, of any NCAA Division I team, in any sport. The Gators have not lost at home since dropping a 4-3 decision to Miami on May 15, 2004, in the NCAA Second Round. Florida is the No. 1-ranked team in the country, according to this week's national polls. Oklahoma State is No. 6. Stanford is No. 5. The Cardinal defeated the Cowgirls, 4-3, in the 2016 NCAA Championship match. Stanford ended Florida's 2016 season with a 4-3 decision in the round of 16. On Saturday, Florida will play host to Oklahoma State at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Gators welcome Stanford to the Ring Tennis Complex, with first-serve set for 12 Noon. If there was ever a weekend pair of matches that was "Must See" – this is it!

2.18.2017 - Next up? #5 Stanford, the team that eliminated UF in the Sweet 16 round last season:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 1 Florida Gators defeated the No. 6 Oklahoma State Cowgirls in a tight 4-2 match at home on Saturday, advancing its streak of consecutive home match wins to 162.
In doubles play, the Cowgirls clinched the doubles point with close matches in the No. 1 and 3 positions, with the Cowgirls' No. 5 Babic/Tur Mari defeating No. 18 Brooke Austin/Kourtney Keegan and the Gators' No. 17 Josie Kuhlman/Belinda Woolcock falling to Lushkova/Adamovic.
Despite losing the doubles point, Florida fought back in singles play to slow the Cowgirls' roll. Belinda Woolcock and Ingrid Neel earned two quick wins to give the Gators a 2-1 lead, until Anna Danilina fell to Aliona Bolsova to tie up the match.
The final points came down to Josie Kuhlman, Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan in the final three positions. Each went into three sets, with Austin finishing first to pull the Gators into the lead. Josie Kuhlman finished right behind her after a taxing three-set match to clinch the win for the Gators.
This match is just one of two huge challenges for the Gators this weekend. The Gators will face the Stanford Cardinal – the 2016 National Champions – the team that defeated the Oklahoma State Cowgirls in the championship match.
Quoting Head Coach Roland Thornqvist:
"I'm proud of these guys, that was the most effort I've seen against a really good team – I mean that team was really good, really good."
On how hard each match was fought… "I did a poor job with talking to this team about what the classic trap is here after coming back from a big tournament win. We do have a veteran team and I trust them completely, but our doubles was not good. We missed turns, we didn't poach, we didn't talk enough, and we still had an opportunity to win. It was almost as if we did just about all we could do wrong and we still had an opportunity to win the doubles point. "It looked dire for a while in singles too, but this team has a knack of finding ways to win and today was certainly a great example of that. This Oklahoma State team is super talented, on every court they have real players, and it took all our mite to get through the finish line today."

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – In a regular-season weekend that was one of the most challenging and competitive in recent memory for the Florida women's tennis team, the Gators came through it with a pair of victories and their nation's-best home winning streak intact. Top-ranked Florida played host to No. 6 Oklahoma State, the 2016 NCAA runner-up, on Saturday evening and earned a 4-2 victory. On Sunday, the task was even more stiff, as No. 5 Sanford, the reigning NCAA Champion, visited the Ring Tennis Complex. The Gators rose to the challenge and captured the hard-fought 4-1 victory against the Cardinal and extended their home win streak to 163 consecutive wins. It is the nation's longest active home win streak of any NCAA Division I team in any sport. Florida opened the match between the two national rivals by capturing the doubles point with wins on courts one and three. While taking the 1-0 lead did bring some breathing room to the orange and blue, they certainly weren't taking it for granted. The last time these two teams met, the Gators won the doubles point, but the Cardinal took the 4-3 victory in the 2016 NCAA Round of 16 en route to winning the NCAA title. The clinching match in last year's meeting was the same match-up in this season's regular-season bout, pitting Florida's Belinda Woolcock against Taylor Davidson. The Cardinal came away with the 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-3 outcome last season. This time, it Woolcock's turn to shine, as she rallied after dropping the first set to post a 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 victory in two hours and eight minutes to secure the dual match win. Woolcock's heroics were set up by wins from Ingrid Neel and Brooke Austin. Neel, a freshman, was the first off the court with an impressive 6-1, 6-3 victory on at the No. 2 position. Stanford got on the board with a win on court No. 6, but Austin showed her grit and also rallied for a tough, three-set victory, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5, that gave the Gators a 3-1 lead. Links of Note Final Scores (PDF) VIDEO: One-on-One with UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist: On the thrilling win: "There's something about these match-ups, these Florida-Stanford match-ups. They've gotten us on a couple of easy ones at their place. Their place is as tough of a place as ours is to play, but when you play them here, our fans help us. Physically, we were dominant today. When you look at the scoreboard in the last 30 minutes, I just felt like we were different physically. I told them in the locker room that it's a good feeling knowing that you're the strongest team because we really pride ourselves on that. In doubles, we played with a lot more determination (than Saturday's match against Oklahoma State). We made returns today and poached when we were supposed to. Overall, this was just a great, great win over a super team." On Brooke Austin's effort: "We've seen this for a couple years now, this kid – she can have a lead, lose the lead and she looks like she's losing and then she finds a lifeline. You can't give that kid an inch. The thing with Brooke is that when she abandons the strike, she's not as good a player. On the sideline you have to continue to tell her. She's an unbelievable ball striker when she's feeling it. She had it today against a tough competitor. I'm extremely happy for her. I'm just proud of her. She's getting better every week." ORLANDO, Fla. – The top-ranked Gators have made the rounds against some of the nation's top teams and Tuesday evening they passed another stern test with a 4-1 win against No. 2 Ohio State in a challenge that was part of the USTA College MatchDay series held at the USTA National Campus in front of 642 fans. Florida overcame another swirling, windy evening and pushed forward all night – something that UF head coach Roland Thornqvist thought was a key to tonight's victory. The Gators' doubles play also gave them the early edge, as Florida captured wins on courts one and three to earn the first point of the dual match. In singles play, Ingrid Neel, Anna Danilina and Josie Kuhlman quickly won the first set of their respective singles matches and Florida seemed to be making quick work of the Buckeyes. Team tennis, however, is full of momentum shifts and that's exactly what happened as matches began to move into the second set. As Kourtney Keegan won her first set, Ohio State took the opening sets on the remaining two courts. Neel was the first to finish her match, punching through on her fifth match-point win her eighth consecutive singles match – a 6-2, 6-3 decision - and give Florida a 2-0 lead. Danilina followed shortly afterwards with a 6-2, 7-5 victory and put the Gators within one more win of taking the dual match. Woolcock dropped her match 6-3, 6-1 to top-ranked Francesca Di Lorenzo and the Buckeyes started to shift the momentum by taking a 3-0 lead in the third set on court five and forcing a third set on court four. Keegan, however, stepped up for her ninth straight singles win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to provide the clinching dual match decision. News & Notes from the Net: Tonight's match marked the second time this season Florida was involved in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 match; the other was a 4-2 Gator win against then-No. 2 North Carolina in the final of the National Team Indoor Championships on February 13. This also marked the 26th time in program history that Florida was involved in a match featuring the nation's top two ranked teams – 15-11 overall record in those matches. The win was UF's 26th straight regular-season victory – a run that began with a 7-0 decision against Arkansas on March 3, 2016. UF improved to 3-0 all-time against Ohio State. Florida Has Been Tested This Year Six of Florida's 13 dual matches have been against teams ranked in the top six of the national ranking. UF's record in those matches: 2-0 at Home; 1-0 Away; 3-0 Neutral Site Individual Numbers of Note Anna Danilina has won her last 4 singles matches Kourtney Keegan has won her last 9 singles matches Ingrid Neel has won her last 8 singles matches The doubles team of Kuhlman/Woolcock has won its last 4 matches Career Numbers Kourtney Keegan has won 107 career doubles matches – a number that moves her into sole possession of 10th in program history (next is Dawn Buth with 109 wins) Postmatch with UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist Overall thoughts on the match: "It was tough to play tonight in swirling, 20-mile-an-hour winds. In singles, I was really pleased with how we moved forward despite the wind. I thought we had a pretty conservative, simple game plan to start and it looked to me like we were the only team that was able to move forward and perhaps that was a big difference, especially in singles today. "Overall, I was really pleased. It was a tough day to play beautiful tennis. I'm glad that we can have days like these when our goal is to be efficient and not beautiful in the way we play and then you become an effective team and that's what happened today." On similar windy conditions last weekend at Texas A&M helping to prep for this match: "I do. Our team is also a little older and we've been through it in that we don't panic. We're very lucid, we think our way through situations and today you saw them do that. To Ohio State's credit, they started inching their way back and made it dicey there at the end. I just like the way we're playing our way forward to finish. We continued to do what got us our leads in the first place to close out matches and that's really important." On doubles and winning the big points: "Our team on court one had laser focus today and that's something we talked about after the South Carolina match. We played at a really high level. The same for our team on court three. Aside from the second game of that match, they had an almost perfect performance." On the experience of College MatchDay and the USTA National Campus: "It was great. The USTA was first class in what they did here. This facility is amazing. It wouldn't shock me if this became a place that hosts the NCAA Tournament because you have everything here that you need to run a successful, large event. The fact that we got to play with TV cameras around on the court added some nerves to it and we were able to whether that. There were a lot of positives from today." On playing host to Georgia on Friday: "We played them at the National Team Indoor Championships earlier this season and it was a nail-bitter. Our matches are always tight like that. There is always extra emotion. I'm glad to be playing this many big matches already this season. We're going to try and treat Friday's match like just another match and play at the highest level possible. We're certainly happy to get back home and play in front of our fans." The Streak(s) is Over The Gators fall to Georgia, 4-1, in the team's first loss of the season. By Kathy Cafazzo | Friday, March 17, 2017
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – "I bet there were people in Gainesville who never thought today would happen, but it did," said Florida Head Coach Roland Thornqvist as he walked into the postmatch press conference at the Ring Tennis Complex Friday evening. He was his usual soft-spoken self, however, there was a somber tone. His Gators had just lost. At home. To a Southeastern Conference opponent. Florida dropped a tough 4-1 decision to rival Georgia, ranked No. 6 in the current national poll. The Gators entered Friday's match boasting a slew of winning streaks. Incredible streaks, some of which spanned more than a decade. Some of the more significant streaks that should be celebrated once the disappointment of the loss wears off: Overall home win streak of 163 that included 23 SEC and NCAA Tournament matches. It was the longest active streak of any NCAA Division I team in any sport of any gender in the country and began on January 22, 2005. UF's last home loss was a 4-3 setback to Miami on May 15, 2004. Regular-season home win streak of 159 was the longest in program history and included four wins in 2017. The streak began on January 25, 2003, following a regular-season finale 4-3 loss to No. 2 Georgia on April 7, 2002. Home win streak against SEC foes of 97 consecutive matches, which is actually the second-longest streak of its kind in program history. UF had won a program-record 108 against SEC teams at home that ended April 7, 2002, to the Bulldogs, who are the only league team to defeat the Gators at home. UF is now 205-2 all-time at home against SEC teams, a record that includes SEC and NCAA Tournament matches. Florida had won 17 consecutive regular-season SEC matches before tonight. UF had won 26 straight regular-season matches – a run that began with a 7-0 decision against Arkansas on March 3, 2016. The Gators never quite seemed their usual confident selves throughout the dual match, while the Bulldogs had their sights set on the upset. On the doubles court, Florida's Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock were the first to post a result, earning a 6-3 win after falling behind 3-1 early. The remaining two matches were tight throughout and the Bulldogs capitalized on a number of unforced errors and won both matches 7-5 by breaking in the final game to take the doubles point. Georgia came out equally as focused on the singles court, where the Bulldogs won the first set at four of the six spots that eventually led to a quick 3-0 team lead after earning wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in 64 minutes. Junior Josie Kuhlman got Florida on the board with a 6-3, 6-0 win on court four, as she won the first three and final eight games to secure the victory against Caroline Brinson. Florida actually seemed to collect some momentum at that point. Anna Danilina had just earned a break to win the second set and force a third. Brooke Austin had dropped her second set in a tiebreak after winning the first and open the third with a pair of breaks for a 3-0 lead. Kourtney Keegan was receiving, down 4-2 in the second after dropping the first and got the break, held and earned another break for a 5-4 lead with the serve. The Gators needed to win all three matches to complete what would have been a stunning comeback. In front of a crowd of 361, however, Florida was unable to rally all the way back, as Keegan's match became the clincher, 6-2, 7-6 (5). The Gators will return to the court on Sunday, when the play host to No. 19 Tennessee beginning at 1 p.m. And with those first serves, aiming to start a slew of new, impressive streaks. Postmatch with UF Head Coach Roland Thornqvist On the significance of the doubles point: "It retrospect, it was pretty big. Credit Georgia for coming in here and beating this team – that's a heck of an accomplishment. We did not play particularly confident and that's the one thing that irks me a little bit. Georgia played really, really well. At one and two singles, they were fantastic today. After they won the doubles point, they really looked like they had a lot of wind in their sails. It was a tough day for us." On some of the Gators being emotionally vocal during their match: "It's hard to change the mentality of a player when they're playing. This team, up until today, has been a real resilient team, tough. We've been able to turn matches, turn sets when we were down. I just didn't see any of that passion and confidence that we had seem up to this point. That's the disappointing thing and that's why I think it's so quiet in the locker room right now. I told them that the streak is the streak. I care about the streak because it meant so much to so many players who have sacrificed to much to win here. That part is really sacred. In and of itself, (the streak) means very little if we can get better from it. On Sunday, we plan to start a new streak." "From a mental standpoint, it didn't look we were there like we normally are. Georgia was fantastic in capitalizing. That's hard to do, come in here and believe you can beat this team, which is arguably one of the best teams we've had here in years. It takes a lot of moxie to do that and they played great. They were able to expose some things today and you have to give them credit." "We made a lot of unforced errors. A ton of them. I can't how many games where we gave away two, sometimes three points. Against a good team, you're going to be punished and we were today. "I told them in the locker room that I'm glad that this was the team that ended or lost the streak because this team can handle it. This is a team of veterans. This is a team that's very close-knit. Perhaps next year's team that's going to be much younger, won't be as equipped to handle if this streak broke next year. I think this team is galvanized. They are together to the point that there will be very little linger effect from today. In a way, if it was going to happen at some point, this would be the team I would choose to suffer the loss because they will be able to handle it the best." On bouncing back: "Losing is part of tennis. We never had a goal at the beginning of the season to go undefeated. We have a goal to be the best we can be in May (for the NCAAs). If we can learn and get better from this, than there is a way we can turn this into a blessing in disguise. Thank goodness we play again on Sunday. I think a lot of those players want to get back out there and get the mulligan. They want to do it again. We'll practice Saturday at 9 a.m. and hopefully, it will be a spirited one and then we'll be ready to tee it up against Tennessee on Sunday." UF remained #1 even after the loss to UGALY. I think that is due to having beaten the poodles earlier and playing such a strong schedule. This Gator team hasn't won easy matches to advance to the top of women's tennis.

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Brooke Austin has played in a number of tight, pressure matches throughout her career and you can add Friday's bout at Arkansas to that list. Austin was the last match on court when the Razorbacks tied up the team score at 3-all. The Gator junior won the 12th game of the third set to force a tiebreak, which she won 7-5 and provided the thrilling clinching dual match point in the 4-3 victory at the George M. Billingsley Tennis Center. Florida began the match winning the doubles point, with Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock earning the 7-5 win on court two. The Gators opened with a 6-1 victory on court one, where Anna Danilina and Ingrid Neel played the top spot for the first time this season. Arkansas won on court three in a tiebreak, 7-5. In singles action, Arkansas took the first decision on court two and evened the match at 1-1. Kuhlman came back with a three-set win on court three, before the Razorbacks again tied the team score with a win at four.
