Playing their 3rd match in 4 days, the Gators didn't have enough left in the tank to compete with #7 Texas: floridagators.com/news/2018/4/1/womens-tennis-7-texas-takes-down-gators.aspxDue to time constraints due to the Tennis Channel TV coverage, the match started off with the 6 single matches. The longhorns swept the first 4 completed matches to win 4-0. Part of it could be the Gators were tired, but I suspect the team hasn't improved back into top 10 play yet. To be sure, the Gators will continue to improve, but the season is getting shorter and so is the time in which to gain that improvement.

Peaking at the right time? #12 UF 4 #5 South Carolina 2 floridagators.com/news/2018/4/7/womens-tennis-gators-upset-no-5-south-carolina-4-2.aspxThe win at South Carolina earned the Gators a 3-way share of first place in the SEC race with South Carolina and Vanderbilt with two matches remaining in Gainesville. Home is huge as UF has played more road and neutral matches than anyone else in the SEC going 9-6 in said matches. Next up: Kentucky on Thursday and Vanderbilt on Saturday.

#10 Florida 4 #23 Kentucky 0 #3 Vanderbilt 4 #7 South Carolina 2 floridagators.com/news/2018/4/12/womens-tennis-gators-blank-kentucky-set-up-sec-title-match-saturday.aspxUF's record advanced to 16-6 (11-1). The Gators and dores are tied at 11-1 atop the SEC standings. In the final SEC match of the regular season, UF and Vandy will play a winner take all SEC championship match on Saturday morning at 11 AM EDT in Gainesville. The dores beat the Gators 4-0 back on February 10 in a non-conference match at the ITA Indoor Championships in Madison, Wi. At the time, Vandy was ranked #1 and UF was a team with 3 true freshmen going through growing pains. UF is improved since then so this should be a fantastic showdown for the SEC championship. Last season, Vandy beat UF twice, regular season and SEC tourney championship match, before losing to UF in the NCAA championships when UF went on to win the 2017 national championship over Stanford. UF played more road matches than any other SEC team so it is fitting that the match to determine the SEC champion is in Gainesville. Win or lose on Saturday, the Gators will be a factor in the SEC and NCAA tournaments.

#10 UF fought it out with #3 Vandy losing 4-3 after dropping the 3rd set of the last match being played 6-4. Senior Peggy Porter had a 4-2 lead, but the Vandy player put it together to win the last 4 games and earn the SEC championship for the dores.
Since the beginning of the season, UF has improved greatly. It'll be interesting to see how much more UF can improve over the SEC and NCAA tourneys. After a Jekyll and Hyde start due to 4 seniors and 3 freshmen, UF has turned into a darn fine team that can and will compete against anyone.
The top 3 seeds for the SEC tourney:
1. Vanderbilt 2. Florida 3. South Carolina
I didn't check, but I'm pretty sure Georgia is the 4 seed.

A good article from floridagators.com that explains about UF only playing with 6 players this season: floridagators.com/news/2018/5/10/chris-harry-making-due-with-a-half-dozen.aspxThat's 3 seniors and 3 true freshmen left to play the season. To rise to #9 in the rankings, second in the SEC and the SEC tourney, to beat some fine programs along the way, and to earn an NCAA regional host spot has been quite the accomplishment. Most elite programs carry 8 players. It was tough to have two turn pro early with little notice and to have senior Brooke Austin go down to injury in December. Like the women gymnastics team performing through the loss of senior all-American Kennedy Baker, I'm proud of this 2018 team regardless of what happens in the NCAA tourney. Go Gators!

UF ran out of gas losing to FSU 4-3. The use of 6 players was just too much to overcome.
The Gators lost the doubles point, but rallied to take a 3-1 lead. That is when the Gators ran out of gas. I was able to watch some of the last two decisive matches. The Gators were drained by the end of both matches.
I'm okay with the loss as the losing in the national championships was inevitable. Hopefully, UF will be back to an 8/9 player team again for the 19 season. HC Thornquist did a tremendous job with what he had to work with in the 18 season after losing two players to the pros in the weeks leading up to the fall semester followed by losing an experienced senior to injury in December.

UF adds an immediately available transfer from the University of Houston to the 2018-19 recruiting class. Dimitrova has 2 years of eligibility: floridagators.com/news/2018/8/2/womens-tennis-gators-add-transfer-tsveta-dimitrova.aspx?path=tennis-womenI'm still wondering if senior Brooke Austin is going to play another season since she was season ending injured in December before the start of the 2018 NCAA season. If Brooke is done, UF still needs 1-2 additional players or the Gators will be playing with the minimum required 6 players which gives them no room for injuries. Playing with 6 in the 2018 NCAA season was a major drag on what the Gators were able to accomplish. When the Gators won the 2017 national championship, UF had an 8 player roster. UF has yet to release the roster for the 2018-19 season which leads me to believe Brooke Austin isn't an option. Most elite programs have 8 players. UF's roster troubles began in the summer of 2017 when two players went pro followed by the loss of Brooke Austin in December. HC Roland Thornquist is still trying to get his roster back in balance before the start of the 2018 NCAA season. That might include another McCartney Kessler who was a rising high school senior at this time last year, but she enrolled in UF in January and played in the 2018 NCAA season as a true freshman. The window of opportunity to get another transfer like Dimitrova is rapidly closing with each passing day towards the start of the fall semester. JMHO, UF must have at least 1 more player to compete successfully at the highest levels of college women's tennis.

2018-19 Roster: floridagators.com/roster.aspx?path=tennis-womenThat's 6 excellent tennis players, but to be a national championship competitive team, Florida needs to add another McCartney Kessler in January. Kessler was still in high school last fall, but she enrolled in UF in January. She was a terrific addition to the team and she performed at a high level for the Gator team. I guess an early enrollee JUCO if talented enough could do the same thing. Right now, UF is one injury away from having to search for a club player on campus to compete in team tennis. UF went down that road last year. They were a good team with 6 players, not a championship caliber team. They lost close hard fought matches to the best teams. Insofar as depth is concerned, the perfect number of players for a team is 8 which is what UF had when they won the 17 national championship, but a team can function quite well with 7 and no major injuries.

A good UF women's tennis team just got much better. An experienced player from Moscow, Russia is joing the 2018/19 roster when she enrolls in January in time for the team competitions: floridagators.com/news/2018/11/14/berlin-and-kharitonova-sign-with-womens-tennis.aspxThis signee gives UF 7 players for the team season. As good as UF was with 6 players last season, they simply ran out of gas when it counted. To become national championship caliber, you must have 7 or 8 players to rely on. This will do it for UF. They will be very good in the SEC and nationally in the 19 team season.
