... for just the 2nd time since '08, the indians emerge from opening day without a loss. optimism remains in place. tongue remains firmly in cheek.
boston-cleveland got snow/colded out today.

Yeah, it's been a rough winter. I usually go out on the back porch at night to enjoy a Cuban cigar and a glass of Port. There were two or three times this winter I had to put on socks.

... for just the 2nd time since '08, the indians emerge from opening day without a loss. optimism remains in place. tongue remains firmly in cheek. boston-cleveland got snow/colded out today. well, for the 8th time in the last 9 years, the tribe comes up empty on opening day, losing 6-2 to the bosox. kluber gave up a hr, everything else were mostly seeing eye singles, but 9 hits and 4 earned in 5 1/3 wasn't good. more importantly, cleveland had just 5 hits all day, all off price in the 1st 6 innings. in the last 4+ innings, the lineup went 1-14. that looked a lot like last year. it is just 1 of 162. btw, today was the coldest home opener in team history (and i remember seeing flurried in the mid 70s on frank robinson's first home game as a manager). wind chill in the low/mid 20s. and it was 14 degrees colder on the lakefront today than it was on christmas day. go figure.

Dont want to argue balls and strikes but Hirschbeck sucked behind the plate___He was giving Price 4+ inches off the plate, Kluber was getting squeezed... imo____having said that, our hitters have to adjust and know that strike zone the next time up at the plate___cant be striking out 3 times in a game like 2 of our batters did today

I think all the umpires were bad on opening day. The Royals game opening day the plate umpire was just laughable, but he was just as bad for both teams. I was laughing at some of the hitters reactions. One Met hitter got two clear strikes at the knees called balls and went to a full count as a result. I think Volquez was still pitching. On the 3=2 pitch Volquez missed badly, about a foot outside at the upper level of the box, and the plate ump rang him up. The hitter looked shocked at first, didn't argue but he really looked like he might take a bite out of his bat.

Reminded me of the calls maddux used to get off the plate. Maybe he forgot his long johns and hand warmers and just wanted to get back to his hotel. Plus if you look at the tribe line up, lots of new faces/unknowns. Umps can be a little tougher on those types.

He would inch is way off the outside corner a little more with each pitch until he found the limit of how far he could go. Then he would pull it back in and live there the rest of the day. Sounds so easy, but you have to be able to consistently dot the I with the ball in order to play that game.

Oh yes...it sounds easy, but as you say, it's not.
I first saw Maddux in '86 and '87 when he was learning how to pitch. All were day games, the team sucked so the park was half-empty most weekdays.
When he missed a pitch or got lit up you could hear him scream...MOTHERFUCKER!! SHIT!! and the like. Echoed all over the park. Good memories.

Glavine got that outside corner in game 6 of the '95 World Series vs the Tribe, needless to say the Braves won 1-0 and the series with that performance

Wow that doesnt sound at all like Maddux, he comes across in interviews wearing glasses and somewhat soft spoken but this was in his later years
