Guess you missed it. Too oblique.<shrug> ...I believe the word isn't "oblique". It's opaque. Was there a joke in there somewhere?...oh... wait...an answer to the film quiz?!! Thank you and yes.

the climb to get back above water finally started last week, so this week's movie quote is appropriate. as long as the great whites don't start circling...
Navy +7 @ Notre Dame: neutral site in jacksonville. middies are averaging 44+/game the last 3 weeks, but allowing 40/game. irish have only scored 43 pts total in its last 3 games but has allowed just 267 yds per in those games. imho those numbers favor the better defense. nd is just 4-11 ats off a win lately, but is 7-3 ats vs navy on a neutral field. still, nd's wins have come vs nevada, syracuse and miami. this opponent is better than those teams. navy. win
Wisconsin -6 1/2 @ Northwestern: wildcats upset uw 13-7 in madison last yr and went 3-1 su/4-0 ats in october. they've also covered the last 7 vs the badgers in evanston. uw is off a tough 4 game stretch (michigan, osu, iowa, unl) and i wonder if, even w/revenge, that they might be relaxing a little. go u northwestern. loss
Oklahoma State +3 @ Kansas State: cowboys off upset of wvu, but the score was a little misleading, w/the 'eers having 10 more 1st downs and about 70 more total yds. similar scenario to navy-nd w/osu having lots of o but no d, and ksu the reverse. bill snyder is 24-10-1 ats at home off an ats loss. kansas state. loss
Florida -4 @ Arkansas: when the gator offense has the ball, 11 players go into the water, i mean, onto the field, but only 3 are good enough to make it alive. at least they can deliver a bomb. they hope. uf is just 3-9 ats as road chalk, but hogs are off a blowout loss to auburn and the arkansas defense is horrible. horrible defenses have a tendency to make underwhelming offenses more, uh, whelming. florida. loss. serves me right for trusting et
Florida State -5 1/2 @ North Carolina State: huge letdown alert for fsu off the emotional clemson loss. noles are more talented, but lately they are just 1-4 ats after playing the tigers, and the wolfpack have had their number; 11-3-1 ats and 6 outright upsets the last 15 years. nc state. win
Iowa +7 1/2 @ Penn State: psu is certainly improved this year, but #12 in the cfb playoff rankings good? no. barkley ran wild vs purdue (200+), but iowa's run d is still solid, the hawkeyes are 15-3 ats in their last 18 road games and 14-7-1 ats as a big 10 dog off a loss. iowa. loss. psu on an impressive roll
Nebraska +17 @ Ohio State: huskers lost but covered vs uw last week, while the buckeye offense continued its slow slide, scoring just 24 vs n'western. unl is an impressive 9-1-1 as away dogs and osu just 4-8 ats as home chalk lately. nebraska's run d is suspect, though; i think weber and samuel will have break out games. plus (cfb nerd stat alert) teams who suffer their 1st loss of the season in an ot game are just 7-17 ats the next week. mix in osu not covering any of its last 4 games, they are due to make a statement. ohio state. win. bucks beat a top 10 team by 59
Washington -17 @ California: got to see quite a bit of both wash-utah and cal-usc last week. this webb kid the bears have at qb is pretty impressive, but man their d is a sieve. plus cal is just 1-5 getting 10+ at home. uw isn't much better (2-5 ats when -13/more away) and also has usc next week. but qb browning and rb gaskin are the real deal, uw's d is allowing just 16 pts/game, and they have revenge (cal won 30-24 last yr). washington. win
Alabama -7 1/2 @ LSU: going against the tide on the road has not been profitable lately. alabama is a sterling 8-3 ats as road chalk the last 2 seasons. they've covered their last 3 games vs lsu, and their last 3 games this yr, but in 2 of them, the cover was due to defensive/special teams tds. that d is awesome, no doubt, but at some point that kind of production has to run out. there are, literally, a ton of trends favoring the bayou boys; ua is 1-6 ats on the road vs a winning team off a bye, tigers are 9-1 ats w/revenge off a win, 5-1 ats off a bye, 6-2 ats getting 4+ at home. plus (cfb nerd alert #2), league home dogs off a bye who won their last game have been a really good bet since '80 (109-64-5 ats, 63%) and even better when the opponent is off a win vs a quality opponent (30-12 ats, 71%). technical and trends aren't everything, but there are too many here to pass up. louisiana state. loss. tigers hold tide to 10 points and STILL don't cover
Air Force +1 1/2 @ Army: flyboys get the commander in chief trophy w/a win, but this is army's best team in 6 yrs. flacons have dominated this series (9-1 su, 8-2 ats) lately, tho their starting qb got banged up last week vs fresno st, their 1st win in a month. meanwhile the cadets have outgained all 7 of their opponents to date this season. if army was getting points (they were +3 early in the week), i'd be on the usma. army is just 2-11 ats off a 10+ ats win. air force. win
Texas -3 1/2 @ Texas Tech: plenty of people think charlie strong saved his job in austin w/last week's win vs baylor. i bet he'd go back on the hot seat w/a loss saturday vs texas tech. horns 0-3 ats lately as road chalk and haven't won a true road game since '14. red raiders are 4-2 ats as home dogs since '14. tech qb patrick mahomes has been beat up a lot this year (and he watched his dad get arrested for intoxication last week during their 2ot win at tcu) but its the last home game of the year for him, maybe for his college career. i think he's goes out in style. texas tech. loss. pick in end zone w/0:20 left
Georgia Tech +10 1/2 @ North Carolina: this is just tech's 2nd true road game of the season.(did harbaugh do their schedule too? lol) jackets are 5-0 ats w/revenge off a win, 5-2 the last 7 vs unc. heels come in off a bye after 2 road wins (miami, uva), but they've yet to cover this yr as a home favorite. that said, i really like their qb, trubisky, who's having a really good season. north carolina. win
6-6. not good enough

Week 10. We're officially in the home stretch. A bunch of us are battling for pride... "You were on the Indianapolis?"
"What happened?"
"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes. Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail.
What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.
Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces. You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour.
Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist. At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again...." Eye love Robert Shaw...Nuff said.....
