It is interesting that all the Liberals here are suddenly worried about the federal government "interfering" with state and local officials in enforcing federal laws. But when federal officials "interfered" with state and local laws concerning voter registration, voter IDs, school administration, law enforcement, etc., the Liberals were overjoyed. If the federal government can tell a state or local government how to enforce their state laws, then they can also demand state and local governments follow federal laws. If a federal law requires a state or local government to hold an illegal immigrant when a federal detention order has been issued, then that state or local government should be held accountable if that order is refused, ignored, or violated. Since the state or local officials can't be arrested en mass, then economic penalties are the sensible alternative. "The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people."

Establishing the rules for voting is delegated to the states. State and local governments control schools. But the federal government opposes states when they attempt to remove dead voters from voting rolls or require valid ID for voting. The federal government has controlled the education system in many, but not all, states and no decisions of consequence can be made without federal approval. A new school can't be built in Alabama without federal approval. But California faces no such requirement.

States and cities can't deport. Deportation is a Federal thing, I believe. Now if they want to be an obstruction to a lawful Federal action, perhaps there are consequences. Perhaps the thing to do if you support sanctuary cities is to collect them and dump them on the Feds who can deport, one at a time. They'll soon be back on the streets but in the system awaiting a call back, that'll never come due to staffing. No mo looking over their shoulder.
That's the most likely strategy.

Which might lead to a larger scope Q, should all police depts be Federal? No.Absolutely not. It's not the Feds' job to enforce state and local laws, and vice versa. Not to mention, I don't want to sign on in order to protect my own city, and then have the Feds assign me to some godawful place like L.A. or Chicago.
