Not really, but after going to the range today and pitting my G30S head to head with my Colt Combat Commander, the 43 year old Colt won hands down. Easier, smoother trigger pull, much more accurate, and heavier, which translates to less recoil and faster time back on target. The Commander is also less finicky about bullet shapes or materials. Lead bullets are a no-no in Glocks, and the 1911 eats 'em up just fine. The Commander is slightly longer and higher, and its empty weight is 13 oz. more, but I'll bear that burden. The Colt only holds 7+1 to the Glock's 10+1, but the greater accuracy makes up for the 3 shots I might miss using the Glock anyway.
Today was kinda like rediscovering your old high school girlfriend, and realizing she was the one you SHOULD have kept all along. So there you have it --- a cold dark confession from me that I was wrong. The Colt 1911A-1 (and authentic copies) is still the best semiauto handgun ever invented. There are more modifications --- sensible AND fanciful --- for 1911's than probably any other firearm out there. I like mine pretty plain Jane, but other folks love to trick em out to the extreme. Either way it is the most perfect semiauto handgun platform to build on that you could ever hope for.
My youngest daughter fell in love with the Commander over the Glock, too. Proof that even the youngsters (who are NOT snowflakes) discover you can't kill a classic.

Generally, after 50 yrs, if you take care of JMB's most popular design, it'll still look like it's sweet 16. One's HS GF, generally, NSM. But then that's why you have trade-in options. You can get the same design w less miles.

You can get the same design w less miles. Most well-made guns will last a long time with some TLC. But the 1911 is, as you say, probably the most solid and efficient semiauto pistol ever designed, with the Walther PP & P-38 probably coming in second and third chronologically, although I'd rate the P-38 2nd since it is of a larger, combat caliber. The P-38 has a very heavy S/A trigger pull, so a cocked and locked 1911 beats it, in trigger pull AND caliber. If you want to shoot more than 10 feet at a ping pong ball with a P-38, you better cock the hammer first.

Haters gonna hate. LOL Anyway, call up any police dept. in the U.S. or in the world for that matter, and ask what their officers carry. Let me know the Glock to colt commander ratio. “The human spirit is more powerful than any drug and that is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship and family. These are the things that matter.”

Let me know the Glock to colt commander ratio. “The human spirit is more powerful than any drug and that is what needs to be nourished: with work, play, friendship and family. I simply came to realize after side by side comparison that the 1911 is still the better gun.
Police departments as a rule don't carry 1911's because the public sees it as "dangerous" to be carrying a handgun with the hammer cocked. They are ignorant and don't know any better. I know damn well what PD's carry and WHY they carry them. The average police officer is also not going to learn the 1911 manual of arms well enough to safely operate it. Most cops don't really care that much about the guns they carry. The dept gives them one, they qualify with it, then they stick it in their holsters and forget about it.
Glocks are carried by police departments because they are most likely the lowest bidder on a contract. Glock INTENTIONALLY makes great deals on their guns. You can buy 2 Glocks for every one Colt, and budget committees like that.
The 1911 has a much better trigger than a Glock. There is nothing you can do to a Glock to vastly improve its trigger pull.

Not in the caliber capability of his 1911 or even his HP but if you every get a chance to look at and strip a 1903 in .32 acp, you see JMB's genius for simplicity. I have one made around 1912 and it functions flawlessly over 100 yrs later. FTWIW, that's the same gun Patton tried to shoot down that Kraut plane with in the movie. Orig chrome firearm w orig grips. It's what I started my wife shooting on. And in a pinch it does the job. Not as good as the reliable .45 1911 but in PD ammo, which it easily eats, 14" through three layers, at close range is enough, properly placed.

And don't forget that Mr. Browning also designed the Ma Deuce, which NO ONE ever talks about retiring or replacing.

These are the things that matter.” Whether you agree with me or not. the fact is most cops practice with their guns only when they are required to. Things might be changing now, but most cops have not been "gun nuts" who were interested in shooting more than they had to. I know lots of cops who never go to the range except on qualification day. Overall, cops have a poor hit-to-miss ratio.
Yes better in MY opinion, and when it is MY ASS on the line, my opinion is the only one that matters.

I disagree with your assumption that most cops don't care how efficient they are with a handgun but I do agree that YOUR opinion is the only one that matters.

I offer my opinions for others to consider, but in the end we all still have to make our own decisions. My assumption isn't an assumption, but if you want to think it is, I can't change your mind any more than I can make a liberal wake up and see the light.
