This is not the first time a concrete bridge burned and melted in Atlanta. about 25 years ago a gasoline tanker overturned on the bridge over Ashford Dunwoody Road on I-285 (known to long time Atlantans as the Pascual Perez Memorial Highway, but that's another story). The bridge was 5 lanes wide and about 60 feet long, and it melted 3 lanes wide for about 20 feet. It took about 85 days and nights to remove and replace the bridge. The contractor got a sizable bonus for quick work.

Oakland had the same thing when a tanker burned and took out an interchange. Took them 28 days to rebuild it. They must have had more Mexicans.

The Oakland one happened a mere few hours after we drove over the exact spot on one of our road trips to Vegas. That's a really tight corner where 80 merges into 580 in the McArthur Maze. Flying along at 85mph then trying that curve at 60 or less is unexpected to drivers who haven't driven it before, not to mention freeways, on/off ramps and bridges criss-crossing all over the place. There must be at least five levels of roadway stacked up over each other. You're way the heck up in the air on the highest one! They don't call it the maze for nuttin.
