Took my granddaughter shooting this afternoon and in the next shooting station there was an elderly couple shooting. I noticed the man was shooting a 1911. I commented on it and he said "Yes, I'm 73 and my dad carried that gun in WWII. " I asked if I could see it and lo and behold I was holding in my paws a GENUINE WWII era 1911A-1, unmodified, and all original as far as I could tell. I have never even HELD one of these before!!! It differed from others since it had the wide hammer spur that was not as common on G.I. 1911's. I then got brave, and he gave me permission to shoot it. I loaded up 5 of my 230 grain handloads and took aim at the bullseye, about 7 yards away. 5 shots later, there was one ragged hole in the bullseye and 1 small hole about an inch away. The old man went "Wow!", and I said "That is an AWESOME gun!" while setting it down very carefully. No way was I going to shoot 5 more and ruin what was probably the luckiest 5 shots of my life.
Seriously, that thing was truly awesome and I was honored to get to shoot a true piece of history. If I had more time, and IF that gun could talk .............
I stupidly did NOT get the man's name, but why ruin a once in a lifetime memory?

Cross it off your bucket list, Deputy Dawg. The good news is, my Colt Combat Commander and my $500 High Standard 1911A-1 shoot every bit as good, have those same classic lines and feel, and I DON'T have to keep them locked away in a storage vault to preserve their value. They won't win any precision target matches, but then, neither would my shooting skill, so that's a moot point. I kinda get the feeling the old man didn't appreciate the value of his gun, either. He probably doesn't even know that thing is worth a lot of money. To him, it is simply "Dad's old gun."

I must admit that I cringed when I read the line where you loaded your handloads into his 1911. Thoughts of a double charge destroying that priceless piece were dancing around in my head...

I must admit that I cringed when I read the line where you loaded your handloads into his 1911. Thoughts of a double charge destroying that priceless piece were dancing around in my head... The rounds I fired through the old warhorse were loaded on 10/31/2015 to match GI ball specs. I've shot many of my handloads in the past 2 years with no worries.
After I shot his gun, I fired 10 of them through my Glock just for the hell of it. The Glock didn't group nearly as well as the old 1911 did, which proves just because something is old, that doesn't mean it isn't the best. In fact I am now considering carrying my Combat Commander cocked and locked. The Glock is good and simple, but no plastic gun will ever beat out the 1911. Those striker fired guns, or any other semiauto pistol, can never match the trigger pull of a 1911. I just have to buy a good concealment holster.
EDIT: I forgot I DO have a 1911 concealment holster! Looks like I'll be carrying Colt again ......... at least during the cool season.

I'D put my G19 up against a 1911 any day. Looks, accuracy, number of shots, and yes, stopping power. I carry speer gold dot 124 gr. +p. Seems the G19 wins hands down!. AGAIN.

It IS a lot easier to shoot a 9MM, this I admit. I shoot my P-38 for fun myself when I want easy shooting. But even little girls can shoot a .45ACP with practice and training.
The only instant "stopping power" comes from a brain shot. Nothing else from a typical handgun will do, depending on the adversary's determination, pain tolerance level, adrenaline and/or drug intake. Unless you destroy the heart, it will continue beating until it runs out of blood.
It's not so much what you use as where you hit. There is a good reason why experienced combat operators, civilian and military, choose the 1911 over any other handgun.

I put two 124 gr. 9mm hollow points center of mass and I'M fairly certain the bad guy's day is over. You, otoh, might be confident carrying a 'bazooka' (.45 ) but my G19 will suffice nicely. So how long have you been concealed carrying your .45 '1911'..?..

So how long have you been concealed carrying your .45 '1911'..?.. Off and on since the 1980's. I change carry guns and have carried 1911, G30S, S&W 645, Colt Agent, S&W Model 19, 66, and 64. I've qualified with the State Police with all the .45's, and I am confident with EVERY gun I carry. I've never carried my P-38, but if I did, I'd be confident with it, too.
Any of them is capable of doing the job if I do MY part. A 9MM/.357 MIGHT expand, but a .45 will never shrink. The 9 generally has more penetration than a .45, but you only need the bullet to travel a few inches to hit a vital organ, and again, ONLY a brain shot guarantees instant incapacitation. A person shot in the heart can live long enough to shoot YOU back and kill you. You can't change human physiology.
Carry your 9MM .............. you aren't hurting my feelings. We're talking CQB here, not a running gun battle shootout type thing. If I am going into something like that, I'll be carrying my Mini-14. NO handgun beats a shotgun or centerfire rifle, other than indoors where you have limited maneuverability.
This ain't a matter of caliber ............. my comment addressed the different triggers, and the 1911 has the best trigger of any semiauto handgun. How does it work? It pulls straight back. The trigger does not pivot, and your finger does not change position. The Glocks and the rest have pivoting triggers, which can never be as precise as the 1911 because of the design differences. In practice, at powder burning range, it won't really matter though. If you can hit a dinner plate at 7 yards in one second or two ......... that's good enough.
It all comes down to what YOU like, and what YOU are confident with. I'm not here to insist that YOU carry a 1911 in .45ACP.

A 9MM/.357 MIGHT expand, but a .45 will never shrink. Thanks for that Lt. Obvious. We know this because you've posted it a hundred times, as if a bullet's diameter has anything to do with shooting an attacker. Lecture in 3... 2... 1...

We know this because you've posted it a hundred times, as if a bullet's diameter has anything to do with shooting an attacker. Lecture in 3... 2... 1... No lecture. One quick fact. A larger bullet can nick a major artery that a smaller bullet might miss. Putting a hole in an artery won't stop the fight immediately, but he WILL run out of juice faster than someone who is not bleeding out. How many bowling pins can you knock down with a bowling ball? Now try it with a baseball.
Hey, if you like the smaller 9MM, use it. I prefer whatever advantage I can get, short of carrying a sawed off shotgun.
And as much as I like the 1911 for duty carry, I decided to keep carrying the Glock concealed. It has no exposed hammer or other projections to snag on clothing and slow down the presentation. An exposed hammer handgun is really not a good choice for concealed carry.
