So does it really matter what HP you carry in your defensive handgun, as long as it cycles the gun reliably?
I don't think it does. I'd find the one that is most accurate and reliable from 25 yards and in (in MY gun), shooting offhand, and let any expansion fend for itself.
Nevermind what the "experts" say ----- each gun is unique.
I carry Winchester PDX1 230 gr. "Bonded" JHP. I don't even know why now. They were probably on sale. 
There may be others that are slightly more accurate, but it's too expensive to play around with JHP factory loads, and all of them are more accurate than I am.

Speer Gold Dot or Federal HST is what I favor. Good stuff. But yeah, getting shot with any bullet will result in a really bad day.

If you have put two rounds center mass, it's highly unlikely that the bad guy will still be standing straight up to give you an easy head shot.
Maybe if he is tied to a [whipping] post? |

If you have put two rounds center mass, it's highly unlikely that the bad guy will still be standing straight up to give you an easy head shot.

Yeah. At 7 yards we did the "2 in the chest, 1 in the head" drill which was easy, but I question the validity of it.
