My S-I-L brought his AR chambered in 6.5 Grendel over the other night for me to take a gander at. While handling it, it dawned on me that an AR would get me killed, even though I've shot them before. The charging handle is in the wrong place, and too small for a hasty grab, especially when trying to reach underneath a low-mounted scope. The safety is in the wrong place. The forward assist is a separate mechanism from everything else.
On a Mini-14 and AK, the charging handle is easy to grab and it's in the right spot. It also doubles as a forward assist, though it isn't really needed on Minis and AK's. The safety is also where it should be on the Mini --- easy to operate with the trigger finger. The AK's safety location is no better than an AR's although it IS at least on the proper side of the gun for 90% of people, so that's a minus for the Russki rifle.

Now wise up, Gomer. 1) I don't have to move my trigger finger to manipulate the safety. 2) I put either a Geissele or Raptor ambi charging handle on all my sunken AR's. Palm edge swipe either side. That's one more side than a Mini. 3) Forward assist - has anyone ever had to use it? Not me. Simple and effective way to move the bolt forward if need be. 4) Ur an idiot. Now go explore Uranus.

Good for you. I learned to shoot rifles when they were still REAL rifles.
1) Either you have an add-on ambi safety or you shoot left handed, which puts you in the minority. 2) Your aftermarket charging handles must be three times the size of the tiny stock ones. The bolt on a Mini locks open after the last shot, so after putting a fresh mag in, you can either pull back on the charging handle with your right hand, or hit the bolt lock button with your left. 3) If the FA on the AR is unnecessary, it wouldn't be there. 4) And yes, the post IS my opinion.

What the hell is wrong with you? Don't you know how to use an AR safety? (hint: use your thumb, dumbass) 2) You have no idea about the AR manual of arms, do you? 3) It isn't necessary. It's there for the extreme unlikeliness of need. 4) Ur still an idiot who explores Uranus.

I have no need to. I don't own an AR, and the more I shoot one, the happier I am that I DON'T own one. a.) What does that have to do with a large ocular lens bell housing being mounted so low to the top of the receiver and over the charging handle that it hinders access to the handle from BOTH sides? You'd need 1.5" long handles on each side for easy grabbing. b.) There's no scope out there that is so big it blocks the charging handle on a Mini-14. 3) The fact that the forward assist was an add-on after so many AR's jammed going into battery, I'd say the need is more than "extremely unlikely." Poor initial design. 4) Your opinions are just about as weighty as TRNcoat's are.

Gettin' mad, postin' in all RED CAPS, eh? Why do you have to use the same attempted insults that Dr. NeedSomeNuts uses? His don't work on me, and neither do yours. Living in Commiefornia is really getting to you, poor feller.

Living in Commiefornia is really getting to you, poor feller. It's call "contrast" dear boy. Makes it easier to "read". Just adding facts to your opinions, that's all. Mini-14 died CLEAN. I told you it was my opinion to start with. I said I would get killed with an AR because I am not that familiar with them and old shootin' habits are hard to break. The Mini works like all semiauto rifles I normally use. There's no learning curve. It's much easier for the army to teach a noob to shoot a gun when he has NO experience on other types. The Marines, who are THE consummate riflemen, didn't want to give up their proven M-14's for the Mattel-16. When you've spent your entire life reaching for controls in certain spots, and all of a sudden they are no longer where they should be, that can be very bad in a firefight.
