It was simply meant to be a great DA combat pistol chambered in .45 ACP., and originally manufactured in stainless steel only. A pure duty/work gun, not a hangar queen. Just those attributes alone were enough to surpass the then-70 year old 1911. But S&W made it BETTER by making it a true DA pistol with a safe hammer-drop/safety lever. When that lever goes down, so does the hammer, and if it remains down, you can NOT cock the hammer or pull the trigger. In addition, the inside of the hammer safety is a solid steel block that prevents the hammer from contacting the breech mounted floating firing pin, which is ALSO blocked from moving by internal links to the trigger. The only negative aspect of the gun is that it has a magazine safety, so that if the magazine is not FIRMLY seated properly, all you can do is pull a perfectly slack trigger, not connected to anything.
This gun is strong enough to handle ANY commercially loaded .45 ACP round, and is heavy and big enough to make an excellent open carry gun for civilians AND cops. It will feed ANY Style of bullet ----- even NO bullet. It is minute of bad guy accurate at 25 yards when you shoot it offhand, with one or both hands on the gun.
do your part when shooting it from a bench rest, and your 25 yard group should resemble and apricot.
Don't fall for the less well constructed and designed "4506," 4516" etc. line. They can't compare to the pure solid framed 645's with modular changeable backstraps and other crap. Glad I got mine for $400.00 !

Not bad. This one sold for only $1750. Granted, mine has a few scratches on it and has actually been carried on police duty and it's a few years older, but I'll settle for that kind of value.
Except mine will NEVER be sold.

Well now that you mention it... They are available, and most of them a lot cheaper than $1750. Maybe the newer 4506 series are just as good .......... I've never tried one. I just like the idea that I have the discontinued, limited production model.

Honestly, it's pretty far down the list. What would bug me is the lack of finger relief in the trigger guard at the front strap, although I've never handled one before.. I've read other people find it uncomfortable... And yes, I know 1911's don't have relief there either.

I have no problem getting my finger in there, even with gloves on, although I only wear Nomex aviator gloves. Don't listen to other people. Try it for yourself and THEN if you don't like it, it's all good. And I understand being far down on the list. I'd LIKE to have an AR just for the hell of it, but it's not a necessity, so it will probably have to wait until I win the lottery.
I already have so many guns that very few of them actually get shot.
No different with my guitars. The only one that gets played with any regularity is my #1 Les Paul. Some of them haven't been out of their cases in months or longer. I THINK I still own a 335-style Univox 12 string, but I'm not sure. I need to (1) remember to look, and (2) dig in the closet and find out.
