the legacy of the baby boomer generation will not be kindly judged imo. once baby boomers obtained political power, they have constantly pushed govn't to lower and lower taxes while at the same time increase their own govn't entitlements. future generations will likely have to pay for their fiscal irresponsibility. Q. What was the most recent % paid by the top 1%, that's NET? Write the check tax owed. Not marginal tax rate. And compare it to what was paid in the 50s w a marginal tax rate of 90% for the top 1%. it would be easier if you just posted the data as i do not know where to access this info

I've seen this one coming for awhile, mainly through my conversations with baby boomers and their friends at the office. As the Baby Boomers are retiring, growing numbers of them have been driven to bankruptcy because of inadequate savings, vanishing pensions, substandard healthcare coverage, medical expenses, and a shrinking safety net. Baby Boomer suicides are also increasing dramatically. I predicted last December that the problem would become a worsening national disaster in 2019, after the Trump/GOP Tax Scam and Healthcare Demolition Act of 2017 begins in earnest. Among other problems, the Trump bill will demolish Medicaid coverage and cut Medicare funding, just as demand by seniors surges. Currently, almost half of the American people are barely able to pay their monthly bills. Meanwhile, Trump is trying to push through another YUGE tax cut (on capital gains) for his billionaire donors. the legacy of the baby boomer generation will not be kindly judged imo. once baby boomers obtained political power, they have constantly pushed govn't to lower and lower taxes while at the same time increase their own govn't entitlements. future generations will likely have to pay for their fiscal irresponsibility. To which entitlements are you referring that have been increased?

To which entitlements are you referring that have been increased? social security, medicare The retirement age has actually gone up for BBs and IIRC, the annual increases were pegged to a base inflation rate rather than the old chain inflation rate. So, SS has actually been trimmed somewhat. finance.yahoo.com/news/8-changes-social-security-2018-110300393.htmlMedicare added Part D. That is true.

To which entitlements are you referring that have been increased? social security, medicare IHS, You need to study the long range Koch/GOP agenda to abolish Medicare and Social Security as we know them. Don't forget that Paul Ryan and the Koch/GOP Tea Party House already passed two budget bills since 2011 to abolish Medicare as we know it. Here are two high-quality references on this subject. 1) Paul Krugman's op-ed this week at NYT about the post-2018 GOP agenda. 2) Nancy McLean's acclaimed history of modern Koch-ism-- Democracy in Chains.

Walter,
Paul Ryan passed a Koch Tea Party House budget bill in 2011 that would have turned Medicare into a GOP Voucher Care plan-- ending Medicare "as we know it." That particular phrase was used at the time by even the conservative WSJ, as I recall. (I think the 2011 Ryan Voucher Care Plan would have been implemented for citizens born after 1959, but I don't recall the exact details.)
The Senate did not pass the House budget bill, fortunately. And, incredibly, Paul Ryan ran as Romney's VP the following year, claiming on the campaign trail that Obamacare was undermining Medicare!!
I'm surprised that so few recall Ryan's long-term efforts to demolish Medicare. It's a tribute to the mind-boggling power of the corporate mass media to suppress critical information in the U.S. today.
Princeton Professor Paul Krugman published an excellent review of this long-term Koch/GOP "Starve-the-Beast" strategy this week. IMO, it should be required reading for all Americans who plan to vote in the 2018 mid-term elections.
Here's the link.

There you are again, wasting pixels whining about something that was not passed. This time, 7 freaking years later. Give it a rest.

Walter,
You need to study McLean's highly-acclaimed, detailed history of the Koch's "misanthropic libertarian" movement-- Democracy in Chains.*
Do you have any idea how much money has been pumped into the Koch machine, for the purpose of hijacking the U.S. government?
It's funny. I referenced the book in a recent discussion with the authors and scholars over at the Education Forum, and they all bought the book, and raved about it-- including James DiEugenio.
I mention it here, and you guys act like it's something written on the same idiotic level as the Trump troll tripe posted here.
At the very least, read Krugman's recent op-ed on the subject. This is real news.

Walter,
It wasn't just in 2011. Wake up... Paul Ryan also tried again to abolish Medicare with his 2015 House budget bill.*
I'm surprised that you and Ra mey don't remember this Koch Medicare-abolition nonsense by Weiner Boy.
I knew it was under-the-radar in our mass media, but I didn't realize that it was THAT under-the-radar!
Professor Krugman, as always, nailed it this week.

Speaking of America's impending Baby Boomer retirement crisis, I just saw this article at the Drudge Report today.
For those who are interested in the national data on the subject, it includes some appalling stats.
More hard evidence that a substantial percentage of elderly American citizens are in deep shite.
Just one of many reasons that the December 2017 Trump GOP Tax Scam & Healthcare Demolition Act is a policy disaster.

According to your link wages have increased more than the rate of inflation since 1964, so wages today are higher proportionally than in 1964. Also from your link, the main reasons those polled haven't increased their savings since last year are: 21% comfortable with retirement savings 16% focusing on another financial priority (maybe buying a house?) 11% haven't gotten around to it 26% income hasn't changed or it decreased All these numbers reflect is that savings haven't INCREASED since last year.
As to your comments of those that have little or no retirement savings, does that include the 35% that are on welfare? If so, then those few will continue to get their welfare benefits (subsidized housing, food stamps, subsidized utilities, subsidized health care (Medicaid and free prescriptions). So the true number of those you seem so concerned about may be minuscule.
