got all my guns cleaned from the weekend kids program a couple of weeks ago. grandson pestering me (bribing at times) as to when we can go shooting again.
This past saturday, after the club regular meeting, gave some shooting instructions to the young lady who won the guided deer hunt at that program. 14 years old, and she was grouping the BRI's at 85 yards that you could cover with a silver dollar. Close enough for gub'ment work.

Close enough for gub'ment work. What's a BRI?BRI was the name of a company that designed a special type of shotgun slug for military and police use. It became somewhat of cult following in the early 80's by deer hunters. So they designed one for that purpose and expanded the company product. Ballistics Research Industries. One of the earliest of the Sabot type. Winchester bought the company a few years later. The slug shape is wasp-waist to insure stable flight, like a long pellet. In 12ga, it's a 50cal 440gr slug, in 20ga its a 40cal 305gr (although listed as 5/8oz(285gr). The rifled slug bbl soon after come on the market to further improve accuracy, and everybody got in the sabot slug business. Lots of sabot slug loads, on paper(specs)look superior in velocity and such but I've not found one that prints on paper like the BRI. Winchester ceased production of the load several years ago and hype their "super sabots". Still able to find inventory to keep myself stocked, or Winchester is producing them again in smaller numbers to fill requests.

I readily admit I don't know a lot about shotgun ammunition. I'm not a hunter, and I stick with the #4 buck that we were issued by the P.D. for defense purposes. If my shotgun had rifle sights on it, I might consider slugs.

the down range ballistics of the 20ga are superior to the 12ga. it comes out a little faster, doesn't poke near as big a hole in the wind which keeps the drop less over a longer distance. Longest shot, 1 shot instant kill, I've taken was 167 yards. When these first hit the "common market" and popularity grew, lots of Brown and Polar bear guides were leaving their .338mag home and carrying 12ga 870s or 1100s or etc. for close back-up.

I have heard the "whistle" of many a deer slug fly over my head. Most of my adventures hunting deer were with rifled shotgun slugs, but I have hunted in other states where hi-powered rifles were allowed. From my observation of the kill, I would rather be shot with a hi-power than a shotgun slug. Neither is my preference,,,,,,,,,but.

From my observation of the kill, I would rather be shot with a hi-power than a shotgun slug. Neither is my preference,,,,,,,,,but. Well, from personal experience, a .270 in the mouth literally split the guy's head in half. I mean LITERALLY. But that was more from the gases than the bullet, I think.
A 12 gauge slug through the girl's eye blew out the back of her head, but her hair covered the mess and face didn't look bad at all. The slug went through her head, a bed headboard, and the wall behind the bed. I don't remember exactly, but I think the slug was pretty much undeformed when recovered. I can't remember every detail of every killing/suicide.
A .22 LR in the head at 2-3 feet also blows brain matter out.
My advice is to not get shot by ANYTHING.

When I tell the cop stories, they are true. This ain't Mayberry!
The snowflakes here who want to question police procedure have NO IDEA what they are talking about.
