WEEK 19NEW YEARS AND BEYONDJANUARY 1 BOWLSOUTBACK BOWL – TAMPA, FL (8-4) IOWA VS (8-4) #18 MISSISSIPPI STATE -7 2 really good defenses. bulldogs allow 268 total yds/game, hawkeyes 291. both give up just 104/game rushing. i think iowa has a big edge on special teams though. msu's fitzgerald has always been a good running qb (1018 this yr) but the 2nd half of the season he improved his passing (11 td's w/no picks last 5 games). but the hawks led the nation in picks (18), and w/covers by sparty and n'western, the big 10 is now 20-8 ats as bowl dogs lately. in a low scoring game, a td is too much to give. CITRUS BOWL – ORLANDO, FL. (9-3) #14 KENTUCKY VS (9-3) #12 PENN STATE -6.5 uk started 5-0 behind a scrappy d and the running of bennie snell, but their pass offense is 114th in efficiency, which is not a good omen vs a psu team who can put up points with big edges behind qb trace mcsorely and 5 receivers who average 12+/catch, and rb miles sanders is snell's equal. 'cats are just 3-6 su/ats in the postseason, while the nitts are 7-0 su as chalk of -7/less, and 7-0 ats as favorites off back/back wins. FIESTA BOWL – GLENDALE, AZ. (9-3) #11 LSU VS (12-0) #8 CENTRAL FLORIDA +7.5 that 1/2 points is a huge tease by vegas to entice the public on ucf. but w/mckenzie out at qb, it's really tough to see any talent edge that doesn't lean toward lsu. the main question is how focused the tigers will be. w/just 10 returning starters entering this season, I think lsu will have a team ready to play. in their last 5 games, the knights allowed 290 yds/game rushing. uh oh... ROSE BOWL – PASADENA, CA (10-3) #9 WASHINGTON VS (12-1) #6 OHIO STATE -6.5 12th meeting between these 2 (bucks lead 8-3) but the 1st in pasadena. uw is better on d, bucks better w/the ball, which everyone knows. but there's a good chance the weather could be a factor tomorrow here; it's cool (around 60 for kickoff) but it is also expected to be unusually windy (up to 25 mph) which could hurt haskins' effectiveness stretching the field. plus tosu is 126th in penalties yards... not good. still, meyer is 10-3 su/ats in bowls and 8-0 su/7-1 ats vs pac 12 foes. late score pushes tosu over the number. SUGAR BOWL – NEW ORLEANS, LA (9-4) #15 TEXAS VS (11-2) #5 GEORGIA -12.5 after having alabama beat, not once but twice, within a calendar year, can the dawgs get their emotions back off the mat? uga is 12-1-1 su/13-1 ats in bowls vs teams who allow 21+/game. on the other side, as a head coach tom herman is 12-2 ats as a dog, 6-0 ats getting points off a loss. 1 last tidbit; bowl double-digit favorites who were double-digit dogs in their previous game are just 2-8 ats. georgia's outstanding o-line may be challenged by the horns' very good d-line, and texas' wr's (humprhey and johnson) I think will cause enough problems to keep this just a little closer than expected. JANUARY 5 FCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME – FRISCO, TX (14-0) NORTH DAKOTA STATE VS (12-2) EASTERN WASHINGTON +14 I have no clue. just taking the points.

I haven't looked at any spread for the game as it is premature to do so. FYI, it opened at 6.5 last Sat and has settled in at 6 since. BTW, Vegas is running with a line for halftime as well. Currently, Bama -3, down from -4. Over/under is 59.5, meaning roughly 33-26.5 final score. Actually sounds about right to me. 59.5 will get a lot of action on the under, I suspect.
