LOL...from your link... "The Holy Spirit revealed to the prophets the messages of Scripture. The writers of the Bible wrote not according to their own will or whim, but only as they were moved, or controlled, by the Spirit of God. The Bible is God’s own book!" No offense, but that is complete nonsense. You are entitled to your opinion. I feel sorry for people like you. Sometimes it takes a near-death experience or a serious trauma in someone's life before they ask for God's help. Fwiw, I used to be like you and then I had some serious events happened in my life and I Saw the Light. Yeah...those full of piety always "feel sorry for people like you". It allows them to feel as though they are somehow separated and above those less pious than they. It also allows them to pronounce to anyone listening how much empathy they have for their fellow man, when in fact they may well have none at all. So spare me your sorrow. I should pity you for not getting with the one true God. Frankly, though, I don't care what you believe. But know this: My God is far more omnipotent than the guy you pray to.

It is like you think your God forgot about you or is pissed at you, or can be talked into doing stuff. It is pathetic and insulting and it implies your God doesn't have a handle on things. You think that if you can appeal to his vanity enough by groveling on your knees and telling him he is great, you might persuade him to help you. What the hell sorta god encourages groveling and begging? And BTW, it is no accident that the human leader who some of those who pray to your god like the best is a guy who responds to groveling and begging and being told how great he is. Same MO.

The God I know and accept is the one true God, Creator of the universe and everything within and beyond. I don't worship a Protestant God, or a Catholic or Jewish God, or the God of any other man-created religion. I go to church occasionally, but it is more for the fellowship and the ability to give to others with the power of a group instead as an individual. I believe the Word was given to a select few by God, to be conveyed to mankind. But the many interpretations and translations over the centuries have led to many misconceptions. I use the Bible as a guide to understanding God, and I read, study, and contemplate the Word and form my own (sometimes misguided or erroneous) conclusions as to what God intends for us to do on His behalf. Many of the conclusions I formed decades ago have proven to be wrong, and I have since revised and updated those conclusions. My God is very likely more akin to Walters God, than it is to anyone elses here, simply because my God is not one defined by some council of bishops a thousand years ago, then reinterpreted by hundreds more councils and bishops, and gaudily clad priests, since then.

Well said. John Mayer has a song called "Love is a verb", and in some ways one could also say, "God is a verb". Neither are static. Lots of books are written about both, yet neither can be precisely defined or explained. "Love ain't a thing" says Mayer. Nor, I submit, is God.

I highlighted the part I disagree with in a weird version of Orange. I think there might be an entity beyond ourselves, something that the human mind cannot comprehend in it's present state, that created the Universe. Beyond that (or even including it) I believe Gods are just creations of mankind's quest to have a definitive answer for every question. Why do innocent babies die at child birth? After all medical options are eliminated, well, it must be God's will. At one time the sun, moon and planets were not explainable. So they became Gods. A belief in a God, any God, gives the human mind a reason to exist. And those Gods can be molded over generations to try and keep the human mind from indulging in it's baser instincts. Humans are violent carnivores, and creating a God to temper those instincts is probably a good thing, but then zealots arrive who take the concept in fucked up directions. And still at the base, it is a creation of the human mind to answer the unanswerable. Who and/or what is God? Only God knows.

One thing I'd like to add. At a low point in my life, my Mom wanted me to speak to her minister (he had a PHD Divinity degree from Duke and somewhere else, but not two Ivy League degrees, so he was probably on the level).
I had two one hour sessions with him, at the end of the second he said "Rationality and reason often conflict with faith, you must let faith be the tiebreaker"
I smiled and nodded, and told Mom that anyone who thought rationality or reason were secondary concerns needed therapy themselves. Yet to this day she tries to lead me to the light.

Yet to this day she tries to lead me to the light. There is a story from 9th C or so England, where invading Pagan Danes were negotiating a surrender of some Christian English King of one of the regions who was surrounded. The King gets in Danish faces and claims his God would not fail him, and that English victory was destiny, that the Christian God would protect him from the wrath of the Danes, and then made the tactical negotiating mistake of recounting the story of how Saint Sebastian could not be killed by Roman arrows. Impressed by this, the Danes decided to put it to the test, saying that if he was right, then the Christian God was far more powerful than Danish gods, and that they would surrender to the King instead. Guess what happened.
