WEEK 5
Sept 26, 2019 10:11:51 GMT -5
Post by mscott59 on Sept 26, 2019 10:11:51 GMT -5
no idea on the quote this week.... and obviously no idea on the games either. 3-12. yuckTHURSDAY GAME1. NAVY AT MEMPHIS -10.5 middies are 3-1 su/4-0 ats in this series since '15, and you can lose lots of $$ going against the academies when they're getting points (navy is 30-13 ats as road dogs the last 7+ yrs). but the tigers are balanced on offense and held 2 of their first 3 opponents to season lows in total yards. w/the memory of blowing a 4th qtr 21-6 lead last season to lose 22-21, I'll lean w/the hosts. edit-3:15 edt 9/26/19. switching to navy. I just can't go against the middies' road dog history. Loss. That's what I get for changing my mind. FRIDAY GAMES2. #12 PENN STATE AT MARYLAND +6.5 terps have had a bye week to stew over losing at temple when they couldn't score a td on 2 possessions inside the 5 in the final minutes. they've had a year to stew over 2 losses to the nitts by a combined score of 104-6. psu is 7-4 ats as road chalk lately, the exact opposite of maryland's record getting points at home, but psu is 0-7 ats as away favorites of less than 10, and were outgained by both pitt and buffalo in those wins. a live dog here... upset alert. I was right, only about the upset alert. I'm upset. loss3. ARIZONA STATE AT #15 CAL -5 ok, everyone who had the bears as the last unbeaten pac 12 team, please raise your hand. not me. great start by cal, w/the best 2 road wins in the country so far (at washington, at ol' miss) on the backs of a solid defense and talented secondary. 3 wins by a td/less. asu's d looked as good til losing at home 34-31 to colorado, who has a decent passing qb. cal's qb... not as good. cal's ats record as home chalk... not so good (2-6 since 2012). first team to 14 may win this one... winSATURDAY GAMES4. BYU AT TOLEDO +1.5 rockets enter off a bye, the cougars enter off a pasting courtesy of washington on the tail end of a tough opening schedule stretch (only program to play 4 power-5 foes). ut is 43-12 su at home this decade, 8-2 ats as home dogs of 6/less, 10-1-1 ats vs foes off double digit losses, and has the offense behind qb mitchell guadagni good enough to frustrate a more physical byu defense. win5. #18 VIRGINIA AT #10 NOTRE DAME -11.5 serious letdown spot for the irish on the heels of the battle at georgia. uva, I'm guessing, was in look-ahead mode last week, trailing old dominion 17-0 at the half when favored by 31. cavs' defense has been solid, allowing 75 yds rushing/game and 18 sacks. uva is 5-1 ats of late as a dog, 13-7-1 ats as road dogs the last 4 years, while nd is 1-6 ats off a su road loss as a dog, just 2-5 ats the last 7 as home chalk of 7+, and the public usually bets up the catholics at least a fg. loss 6. #21 USC AT #17 WASHINGTON -10 trojans down to a 3rd string qb making his first road start. fink did come off the bench and lead sc to a win over utah last week, but the utes outgained them by nearly 100 yds. huskies are 4-1 ats at home vs sc, though just 2-5 ats lately as home favorites. uw has the better run game and the better defense, not to mention usc is 1-11 ats the last 4 years getting points away from the coliseum. win7. WAKE FOREST AT BOSTON COLLEGE +7 this is just the 4th time in the last decade that wake has been a road favorite in an acc game (2 of those previous 3 were vs duke). but the demon deacons are 7-0 ats as chalk of less than 2 td's w/revenge (bc won 41-34 in '18). eagles are 9-2-1 ats getting points lately, 5-1-1 ats as a home dog. bc is +9 in turnover margin (haven't turned the ball over once all year) and you wonder how long that can continue. loss 8. MISSISSIPPI STATE AT #7 AUBURN -11 nice matchup of au's outstanding d-line vs kylin hill, the sec's leading rusher. msu looked pretty pedestrian vs kansas st, while the tigers were winning at a&m (despite being outgained 391-301). bulldogs have covered 5 of the last 7 vs auburn, who has a trip to on deck. sandwich game blues? I hope so. loss.9. #24 KANSAS STATE AT OKLAHOMA STATE -5 cowboys come off a tough loss at texas, while ksu had that sec win on the road at starkville. wildcats have covered 7 of the last 8 in this series, 5 straight in stillwater, and is 11-4 ats as road dogs the last 4+ years. loss10. #5 OHIO STATE AT NEBRASKA +17.5 bucks' first big test. last week the huskers slipped by illinois despite dominating the stats (671-299 in total yds). adrian martinez's mobility as a qb will be tough to defend. another factor is the weather; there's a chance of t-storms saturday night which could even the playing field a little more in justin fields' 1st start in a truly hostile environment. unl is 0-4 ats the last 3+ yrs as home dogs, though. tosu is 16-10-1 ats as road favorites since '15, but 3 of those losses were on the road (2 at night) as faves of 14-20 pts. this is 'the' game in lincoln of the last dozen years or so, and they will make things interesting. loss11. KENTUCKY AT SOUTH CAROLINA -2.5 2 programs who've lost their starting qb's. uk has won 5 straight in this series, though. loss12. WASHINGTON STATE AT #19 UTAH -5.5 both are off deflating losses. wsu has won/covered the last 4 in this series, they're 7-0 ats vs pac 12 revenge, and 34-17-1 ats in pac 12 games off a loss. loss13. UCLA AT ARIZONA -7.5 so did the bruins finally turn a corner with that 50 point 2nd half, fueled in part by 6 washington state turnovers, to comeback from 28 down to win 67-63? imho, no. 'zona enters off a bye, w/revenge from a 31-30 loss last year, and teams off a win/bye week w/revenge, since 1980, are 30-8 ats in league games. loss. would have been nice to know that tate was scratched14. MINNESOTA AT PURDUE -1 revenge spot for the boilers, who got drilled 41-10 in the twin cities last year. gophers' pass defense is not that good, and purdue qb elijah sindelar should be back off a concussion 2 weeks ago. minnesota is 1-7-2 ats in the last decade as a big 10 road dog of 7/less. pu's sindelar and their best player, wr rondale moore, both got hurt on the same 1st qtr play and neither returned.15. NC STATE AT FLORIDA STATE -6 in the last 20 years, the wolfpack has caused fsu plenty of headaches, going 14-3 ats w/8 outright upset wins. but nc state's leading rusher tweaked a hamstring last week. noles' offense has shown signs of life, and alex hornibrook led a comeback win off the bench over l'ville, but 6 may be too much to give. loss, of course.[/quote]

Navy was outplaying Memphis until their starting FB went out of the game in the 2nd quarter. Not having the inside presence that was needed, Navy became a lesser and easier controlled offense. I'm 0-1, but happy I took the gritty Midshipmen. They, like Army, are fun to watch.
