virginia tech -2.5 vs kentucky
uk is 1-4 su in its last 5 bowl games, and just 11-22 ats as a dog vs a foe w/a better record. mix in bud foster's last game as def coord. for the hokies, ending a 33 yr career, and his ability to defend the run-oriented offense the wildcats moved to after their qb injuries, and I like tech.

florida st. vs arizona st. -4
noles have picked up their play for their interim coach. but their mediocre run offense now goes up vs a solid asu run defense, minus their best rb. fsu's defense allows 280 yds/game thru the air, and the sun devils' frosh qb jayden daniels has shown lots of promise. can't believe I'm backing a pac 12 favorite in a bowl game but I am

navy -2.5 vs kansas st.
middies have won 4 of their last 5 bowl games, covering 5 straight. k-state scraps on defense, and the extra time helps in defending the option, but navy is on a roll, and military teams are 7-1 ats as bowl chalk of a td/less.

wyoming -7 vs georgia st
gsu is pretty good on offense (32.5/game, 14th nationally running the ball) but pretty bad on defense (36.1 ppg). the cowboys are pretty good on defense (17 pts/game, 6th best vs the run), pretty woeful on offense (24 ppg). wyoming is 1-6-1 ats as -7/better w/rest, while sun belt teams getting 3+ in bowls are 12-3 ats. but gsu's offense has been less effective since their qb tore his acl in november. going against the trends here, with the chalk and the superior defense.

utah -7 vs texas
tough spot for the utes, who probably had a cfb playoff spot in their hands had they beaten oregon in the pac 12 ccg. now they have to be basically a road favorite vs the longhorns in san antonio. under kyle whittingham utah is 11-2 su/9-4 ats in bowls, while tom herman is 15-4 ats as a head coach when getting points. despite texas' disappointing 7-5 record in a season beset by injuries to their db's/rb's, I think they have an emotional edge vs what has to be a flat utah team.

minnesota vs auburn -7
the early afternoon on new year's day features a pair of big 10/sec matchups. auburn is 2-4 su in bowls under malzahn. gophers beat ga tech 36-10 in fleck's 1st season but this represents a major step up. I actually think minnesota is better in the offensive skill categories, but war eagle has a significant edge on the o-line/d-line.

michigan vs alabama -7
most interesting bowl game of the day to me. harbaugh is 1-3 su/ats in bowls w/um, while saban is 2-2 su/ats in non-playoff/bcs bowls, but after 5 straight playoff seasons, how fired up will the tide be here? that combined w/a defense that slipped significantly from recent years (losing 2 starting lb's just weeks before the season opener didn't help) opens the door for an ugly hat offense which can move the ball to keep it close.

2 pretty even teams imho except for one position; qb, where the ducks have a big edge in herbert. both teams are physical up front, which is normal in madison but new for uo. badgers' 18th straight bowl game (have won the last 5). both defenses have excelled this year, too. I'll take the points in a low-scoring affair.

georgia -5 vs baylor
ugh struggled down the stretch on offense. the bears have been money-makers when getting points, covering 8 straight as a dog w/6 outright upsets. big emotional edge to baylor, who's excited to be there.

interim coach for bc after addazio getting fired (interim coaches are 3-13 ats in bowls off a win). eagles are 1-6 su/2-5 ats in bowls of late. uc got out-gained in 8 games this season, but their qb desmond ridder was banged up in nov. he should be healthier now, the bearcats have the better defense too. cincy's bowl record isn't so hot (3-11 ats since 2000) and they are last in d-1 in penalties. on the other side, bc rb a.j. dillon is skipping the game for the nfl draft. the only positive for either team is uc's defense so I'll bank on that.

indiana vs tennessee -2.5
1st bowl since '16 for both. iu is better on offense, and a win would give the hoosiers their 1st 9 win season since 1967 (the last time they played in pasadena) but struggled in their last 3 games. once the vols settled on a starting o-line in mid-season, their play solidified, and they are better on d/st's. counting today (1/1/20), the sec is 11-4 su/12-3 ats vs the big 10 in bowls of late.

11th bowl (5 straight) for the bobcats under frank solich (4-6 su/5-5 ats). nevada has more experienced on the blue turf in boise, but ou's offense is solid. even w/wins by buffalo and kent state in earlier bowls, the mac has sucked in the post season since '98 (18-48 su, 22-40-2 ats), but I'll take this year's trend.

after a 5 year bowl draught, the green wave are in the post season a 2nd straight year, but they ended the season losing 5 of 6. so miss went -6 in turnover margin its final 2 games, but has a stout run d (113 yds/game) which should slow down tulane's option.

I really like the over (total is 70 as of today). clemson allowed just 1 team during the regular season to gain 300+ yards, then tosu piles up 516 and should have scored much more than 23. have to figure lsu will finish drives better, but they've (bayou bengals) also allowed 38+ to 4 opponents this year. except for lsu's stronger sec schedule, these 2 mirror each other in terms of talent, especially on offense. tough to turn away getting points for a team that's won 29 straight games.
