WEEK 16
Dec 19, 2021 12:32:20 GMT -5
Post by mscott59 on Dec 19, 2021 12:32:20 GMT -5
5-4WEEK 16GAMES ALL TIMES EST FRIDAY, 17DEC 1. BAHAMAS BOWL – NAUSAU, BAHAMASNOON – (7-5) TOLEDO ROCKETS VS (6-6) MIDDLE TENNESSEE STATE BLUE RAIDERS +10.5, (OPEN +9) 1st bowl game for both since '18, and both also sprinted at season's end (ut 3-0, mtsu 4-2) to become bowl eligible. rockets are better in every aspect, but 10+ better? blue raiders went 1-5 su/ats vs bowl eligible foes, and the only win (marshall) came in a game where mtsu got outgained by nearly 200 yds. plus vs a weaker schedule, they were just #100 in total offense. Toledo. loss2. CURE BOWL – ORLANDO, FLORIDA6PM – (10-2) COASTAL CAROLINA CHANTICLEERS VS (9-4) NORTHERN ILLINOIS HUSKIES +10.5, (OPEN +9.5) speaking of records vs bowl teams, only 1 in the post season this year went ofer in that category; coastal carolina (0-2). niu went 5-4 su vs bowl opponents. my hesitation in backing the huskies is because they gave up 264/game rushing the last 5 games. that said, a year ago ccu played here and lost to liberty in a great game. cfb nerd stat alert; since '04 teams who return the same bowl where they lost the previous year are 0-5 su/ats. northern illinois. win.SATURDAY, 18 DEC 3. ROOF CLAIM.COM BOCA RATON BOWL – BOCA RATON, FLORIDA11A – (10-3) APPALACHIAN STATE MOUNTAINEERS VS (8-5) WESTERN KENTUCKY HILLTOPPERS +3, (OPEN +2.5) both teams enter off ccg losses, and in favor of wku (cfb nerd stat alert), bowl chalk off title game losses are 29-41-1 ats of late. in the 7 games the hilltoppers played vs fellow bowlers in '21, they outgained all 7 of them. wku also has bailey zappe, a qb who transferred in from houston baptist, who tossed 56 td passes and threw for 5570 (#1 in fbs). toss in the aftermath of the deadly tornados that ravaged the bowling green area, and despite asu's edge on defense I think the stats and the karma are w/the dog here. western kentucky. win4. NEW MEXICO BOWL – ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO2:15P – (7-5) TEXAS – EL PASO MINERS VS (9-3) FRESNO STATE BULLDOGS -11.5, (OPEN-13) utep began '21 at 6-1, then lost 4 of their last 5 vs the #125 schedule in the country. the miners are also 0-6 su/ats in bowls since 1980. on the flip side, fresno won 5 of its last 6 and has a star qb in jake haener. the bulldogs won't have coach kalen deboer (left for washington), and they're only 1-6 ats as bowl chalk, but there is not 1 category on either side of the ball where utep is better. fresno state. loss5. INDEPENCENCE BOWL – SHREVESPORT, LOUISIANA3:30P – (8-4) ALABAMA BIRMINGHAM BLAZERS VS (10-2) BRIGHAM YOUNG COUGARS -7, (OPEN -8) great season for the cougars, who may be the only program to date who has wins over 2 league champs (utah/pac 12, utah st/mwc). they played a much tougher schedule but must now travel halfway across the country to play the blazers in what should be a virtual home game for the blazers, who allowed just 324 yds/game on d this year and has covered 4 of its last 5 as underdogs. plus get a load of these trends; byu is 9-16-1 ats vs teams who allow less than 24 ppg (uab allows 23) and 6-17 ats (1-11 ats the last 12) as favorites when they give up 21+ (uab averages 29). alabama-birmingham. win6. LENDING TREE BOWL – MOBILE, ALABAMA5:45P – (7-5) EASTERN MICHIGAN EAGLES VS (7-5) LIBERTY FLAMES -9, (OPEN -7) liberty qb malik willis deservedly received plenty of pre-season press for his talent, but had a subpar year (3020 yds, 29 tds/14 picks, 59.7% completions, 51 sacks... yikes). the flames lost their last 3 games of the regular season and I'm wondering if willis will skip the game. on the other side, since '16 the eagles are an incredible 30-9 ats when getting points. and the last 14 times emu has been a road dog off a su loss, they've covered all 14 times. eastern michigan. loss7. LA BOWL – LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA7:30P – (7-5) OREGON STATE BEAVERS VS (10-3) UTAH STATE AGGIES +7, (OPEN +6.5) this isn't just the la bowl, it's the jimmy kimmel la bowl (will matt damon be promised to do the opening coin toss then be forced to ask someone for a coin to toss?). I like league champs getting points in bowl games, and am not much of a fan of pac 12 teams playing off a win (they're 1-21 ats since '15!!!). the aggies won 7 of their last 8 to end the season, allowed just 327 yds/game in the last 6, and went 5-2 ats as underdogs. utah state. win8. NEW ORLEANS BOWL – NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA9:15P – (7-5) MARSHALL THUNDERING HERD VS (12-1) LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE RAGIN CAJUNS -5, (OPEN-5) enjoyed watching the cajuns win the sun belt title game w/billy napier staying on as head coach before taking the uf job, but he won't be on the sidelines for this one, which I think may cause a let down even though the game is at the superdome. 2 solid defenses going at it, along w/a nice contrast in qb styles, /ull's nimble levi lewis vs the herd's grant wells. marshall is 12-3 su/ats of late in bowl games, while louisiana is 0-4 ats it's last 4 bowl games. is anyone else surprised that a 12-1 virtual home team is only -5 vs a 7-5 foe? . we are... marshall. loss. wow what an ugly 4th qtr if you're a herd fanMONDAY 20DEC 9. MYRTLE BEACH BOWL – MYRTLE BEACH, SOUTH CAROLINA 2:30P – (6-6) TULSA HURRICANE VS (6-6) OLD DOMINION MONARCHS +9.5, (OPEN +7) I was impressed w/tulsa and how they scrapped for 3+ qtrs here vs tosu in september. 4 of their 6 losses were by a td/less, and they won 3 straight to end the season. odu did them 2 better, coming back from a 1-6 start to win 5 in a row after switching to backup qb hayden wolff. but they played the #124 ranked schedule this year, while tulsa (#68) covered the spread vs 3 teams in the current cfb playoff top 10. plus (cfb nerd stat alert w/flashing lights) 6 other programs have won their last 5 games to make a bowl game. none of them have covered the bowl game. tulsa. win
