NASA announces that they have completed a big phase of the mirror alignment to focus the views of all 18 mirrors into one image. Below is a photo of the star that they focused on. It is a star in the BigDipper constellation but that is not visible to the naked eye. In the photo, not only is it visible, but there are entire galaxies visible in the background.  |

If we are, it would be like every human on Earth won the lotto on the same day. ...which, BTW, would be a hoot. "I can't believe it hon'! We won! We won the lotto! We're rich! We're rich!" Later that day... "...Wait...our payout is 1/50th of a penny? WTF!? Imagine. All those galaxies, not stars, but freakin' galaxies, in the background of just one star.. It is overwhelming to contemplate. Well I can't get the pic to post, but to quote my favorite comic Calvin and Hobbs while discussing the extinction of species by mankind. On a side note: My Granddaughter , the future Astrophysicist. Graduated her BS Summa Cum Laude Honors College today from UA at Huntsville. Now on to her masters and then PhD.

Apparently a very minor degradation in overall quality, but not an unexpected event, so there are built-in workarounds.
I read somewhere, "Think super-duper Photoshop" as computer software/hardware compensates for that small area of missing mirror.
