B1G Volleyball

The Big Ten has always quality programs led by Penn State, Minnesota and Nebraska but the depth of the conference has been on full display these last couple of years. This week's AVCA poll has FIVE B1G teams in the Top 10.

Wisky's a young team so defending their National Title will be challenging. But they have a bunch of talented gals that are long and lanky, led by a 6'9" soph, who was the MVP of the 2021 NCAA Championship.

For giggles I went through the roster and noted the support staff dedicated to the VB program. Strength coach, nutrition coach, meditation coach, trainer, scouting director, VB brand manager, Operations Director and a full stable of coaches. Each team member has a co-ordinated NIL link,
Instagram, TikTok, Twitter accounts. I guess that's normal today but the co-ordination and SM professional support was new to me.

Kelly Sheffield has led the charge at many levels to further push women's volleyball to the forefront, in particular getting the sport on TV more. He is a great follow on Twitter because he is so outspoken.

Along with Nebraska, the Wisconsin program is now the gold standard in the country, passing Penn State in recent years but even moreso now that Russ Rose retired. Hell of a coach and a hell of a nice guy. My team happened to be on a court near the court of a player he was recruiting one year at AAU Nationals. Said good morning to him, he smiled, said good morning and wished us luck.

Apologies for not remembering but is/are your daughter(s) (?) still playing? And if they are still pre college, what school do they favor?

She just graduated high school this past May. In Feb, she was days away from committing when she tore her ACL at practice. After a lot of thought, prayer and a few tears, she decided against playing in college, at least for now.

She was recruited by a number of D2 and D3 schools and ultimately landed on her final two being Guilford in Greensboro, NC and Penn State Harrisburg, a D3 program and branch campus of Penn State. She ended up going to Florida Atlantic for her pre-med studies but had she decided to play, we think she would have ended up at Penn State. I never asked her and she never brought it up but she loved it and really connected with the coach so we suspect that was her top choice. I joked with Mark that it was going to be tough for me to put on the Nittany Lion gear. Having to take a pic in front of the big "We Are" sign in their gym was tough to stomach, too. LOL

FAU does have a club program that is pretty competitive so we are hoping she gives that a shot once her knee is completely healed. She was too damn good not to stay involved in the game in some fashion but we'll see.

along those same lines, I received a marketing email from btn yesterday, promoting a dedicated streaming service providing total access to big 10 volleyball. and yes, this is the 21st century norm for college varsity athletics.

Franklin is a beast. Big whip and great ball placement. Huge match for her. I am partial to RSs and thought Devyn Robinson played really well for the Badgers, especially in the first. Her and Hart both had great matches on the block.

The B1G conference tournament is going to be something. Can't wait.

Just watched the Buckeyes and Huskers from the other day... great match and not just because the Buckeyes pulled off the upset. The defense by both teams was spectacular which is saying something because the big guns on the pins were hammering the ball. Emily London for Ohio State and Batenhorst from NU put on a show.

Buckeyes win their 14th straight and move into the Top 5 in this week's rankings.

The B1G tournament is going to be something. Can't wait!

Maryland came into last night's match with Ohio State sporting a .500 record overall, going 5-11 in the B1G. And of course, they pull a shocker, knocking off the Buckeyes in four sets. 🤦

Buckeyes lose the first set then win the next three to advance to the Regional Finals. Emily Londot had 29 kills, hitting a ridiculous .500 on 50 swings. And for good measure, she added 13 digs. Great match!
