so I happened to cross a nbc rebroadcast this am of the 1969 jets-colts game in miami and I’m noticing something I didn’t realize. matt snell gained 141 yds rushing, 40 yds receiving and scored the game’s only td for ny. (imho he also deserved the mvp, which instead went to joe nameth. the jets’ defense en masse was also more deserving). for baltimore tom matte picked up 116 yds on just 11 carries and 30 yds receiving.
the players had 3 things in common; they each led their teams in total yds gained from scrimmage from the same position, they both played for woody/tosu, and both played positions other than rb for at least part of their college career. matte was a qb, and snell alternated between rb and de.
I’m guessing that’s not the only time that’s happened in a super bowl or nfl title game, but was curious if anyone here recalls a game where the leading qb’s, rb’s or wr’s for each team were alums of the same school.

In a SB, or just a league game? I'd guess if you mixed and matched you'd find a QB who played against a RB, etc. But head to head, QB v QB, etc, has got to be rare.

I was thinking same position for opposing teams in a super bowl or nfl title game prior to '66. obviously on offense you've got numerous stats, but it would probably be equally rare at any position on defense/special teams also, ie linebackers on opposing teams from the same college program who each led their team in tackles or picks. re snell/matte, I like to think I've read/aware of plenty of buckeye football history but I've never read nor even realized a stat/occurance like that before.

Difficult for any game. I would think that event was special.
Start w QBs. From QB U, Prrrdue, and would you get Dawson V Griese in a playoff game? Yes in '71 but that isn't the SB, though it was a great 2 OT game. You might be able to match up opposing players at the same position from the same school but more from Prrrdu? Doubtful. Maybe you can match up USC, who, in the past, had RBs and QBs.
It'd have to be a big program w a funnel to the NFL of ten, more or one less, players a yr, for decade or more, across the board. Especially w the inverse draft the NFL has.
Today, going forward, LSU, Bama, TOSU, UGA seem to have the most talent being drafted. Apologies if I missed a school. Teams and programs like USC, OK and Texas I think have the potential. Maybe Tenn and Meat.

I’m betting it’s happened before/since but none pop immediately to mind. anyway just a cool trivial tidbit

For instance, USC D backfield mates Ronnie Lott and Dennis Smith played against each other in the 1990 SB, Lott for 49rs and Smith for Broncos.
