Strangely enough, I am just now watching Top Gun II. I believe that the P-51 Tom Cruise is working on when the movie starts really is his personally owned plane that he flies around in for kicks.
Turns out I was right:

Not to mention, in 2022, such a mission would have never happened. We'd simply fly in a B-2 or two with about 4 F-35's for cover and that's all she wrote. The B-2's can refuel enroute if needed, and carrier-based F-35's can launch from closer in. Remember, there are 3 F-35 variants.
Movie 2's dialogue was awful, too. With crap like a thorough chewing out by the Admiral followed by "God help us, I have to send you back to Top Gun," I wanted to puke. Seeing Val Kilmer was sad, too. He couldn't even talk then, and when you hear his "voice," he is mouthing the words, and I think it was his son who provided the actual speech.

Kilmer reported in 2020 that he had been cancer-free for four years, but he detailed ongoing struggles with medical treatments including the use of a feeding tube to eat.[83] In 2021, Kilmer worked with Sonantic, a London-based software company, to digitally recreate his voice using AI technology and archived audio recordings of his voice.[84] Over 40 vocal models were generated to find the closest match, which could then be used in future projects.[85][86] For the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick, director Joseph Kosinski said that despite reports to the contrary, they did not use Sonantic's AI technology in the film, instead they used Kilmer's actual voice and digitally altered it for clarity

I see no need to ever watch that movie again.

I've watched it 3 or 4 times and like it every time. The original is so 80's dated and I can't stand the young cocky Tommy. He became more palatable to me later on - M.I., Jack Reacher, etc. Tommy rarely disappoints now. Risky Business causes a major gag reflex.

He became more palatable to me later on - M.I., Jack Reacher, etc. Tommy rarely disappoints now. Risky Business causes a major gag reflex. I don't watch Tom Cruise movies as a rule. Only the ones where he might be flying, since he is a real pilot.
"Maverick" would have been bounced from the Top Gun program, no matter WHO his daddy was. He should have been separated from the Navy, and he could have MAYBE contracted as a civilian test pilot on the "Darkstar" aircraft. Still, his ROLE required him to be cocky. Edward G. Robinson and James Cagney were 2 of the sweetest guys in the world, but their gangster characters were two of the WORST. Look at Vincent Price, Christopher Lee, Boris Karlov, and Bela Lugosi. Add Lon Chaney, Jr. Even James Arness was "The Thing From Another World" in the 1951 movie of the same name.
Cruise played a good character in "A Few Good Men" but he had a very good supporting cast, which made them ALL believable.
The only other Tom Cruise movie I actually watched before TG II was "American Made" about the drug smuggler Barry Seal, who had become very successful. But Cruise was a thin, good looking guy who did not look like fat ugly Barry Seal at all. I just loved watching all the flying sequences and pointing out all the inconsistencies in their actual flight configurations, control manipulations, etc. And I think Cruise did a lot of his own flying in that one, since no actor was allowed to touch any one of those expensive military jets in the Top Gun movies. The SuperHornet is around $100 million, and getting one airborne uses over $11,000 per hour in fuel costs. EDIT: That's the total cost per hour, not just fuel costs.
Getting back to Seal, he had turned DEA informant, and was scheduled to testify against Pablo Escobar Gaviria. I can show you exactly where he was gunned down by three Colombian thugs with .45 ACP Mac-10 submachine guns. All 3 were sentenced to life in Angola, and one of them has since died.
So no, I was never a fan of Tom Cruise himself. I ignored his car race movies, spy movies, and all that other crap.
The only good superhero movies were the original B&W Superman TV shows.
