Ah, what beautifully simple machines those early 60s VWs were.
What a joy they were to work on.

One of my friends I worked with on our VW weekends got bit badly by the car bug and got really serious into the engineering. About five years after I was long gone from car repair and VWs, he dropped out of UCLA Dental school a month before graduation to become the Chief Mechanic at Lotus America. Last I heard of him about 1980 he was working his way into F1 racing.
