Given what is going on now, it seems ridiculous to punish the kids of yesteryear.

Given what is going on now, it seems ridiculous to punish the kids of yesteryear. So you think a kid who commits murder as a juvenile is immune from prosecution 30 years later. Gotcha. The rules back then were what they were, and violating them then had consequences.
But honestly, who cares about Reggie Bush now?
Is USC going to get back the 14 victories that his misconduct caused them to lose? He and the university misbehaved, and they paid for it. End of story.
Based on this bullshit, you would have to vacate every alabama victory since 1958.

In other news Ohio St wants 2010 back then NCAA didn't take his Heisman or give it back. Bush voluntarily gave it up and the Heisman Trust voluntarily returned it. Improper player benefits were only a part of the issue. Many think, much like Nixon and Clinton, it was the coverup and lie that got them.
However, would Tressel's lies, fraud, deceit and cover up be enough to warrant the NCAA's action V the team's record? Maybe, maybe not. Had The Vest reported everything he knew, when he knew it, would the NCAA's actions have been different? Maybe, maybe not.
Further, while awards, medals, trinkets were gifted to and owned by the players, who owned the cleats, uniforms, helmets, etc, they traded for tattoos? Was that theft?
In any event, the 1, be it 12-1 or 0-1, would not have changed.

I don't believe the NCAA has anything to do with the Hypesman Trophy. It's my understanding that the Trust is completely private. If I am wrong, I am open to being corrected.

Tressell lied to cover the players who traded gear for tattoos__where was the fraud? Here's one.September 13, 2010: Tressel signs an annual NCAA certificate of compliance form indicating he knows of no violations and has reported to the school any knowledge of possible violations. The form is required of all college coaches, officials and administrators by NCAA rules. Tressel’s OSU contract also requires that he disclose any information he has pertaining to known or potential NCAA violations.law.marquette.edu/national-sports-law-institute/tattoogate-january-10-2012

When and how much money did Tressell gain from this scandal? Fraud = wrongful or criminal deception. Fraudulent acts are usually motivated by the desire to escape charges or for financial gain. In this case not criminal under USA law but criminal under the guidance of the NCAA. The Vest submitted a document that indicated he knows of no violations and by his employment contract he must immediately disclose anything to TOSU.
But the Q you asked might be better phrased "How much money did he lose because of this event?" Had his wrongful deception gone unchecked he'd get to keep his job and the $X million he would have earned.
