I grew up with Walter Cronkite and The Huntley–Brinkley Report on every night. Man, can you imagine those guys reviewing what we have now. Goodnight David, Goodnight Chet! Yeah, they knew how to report the news. The news, if it bleeds, it leads, mentality hasn't changed much but the assassination of John F. Kennedy 60 years ago offers insight. After a gunman killed the president, television news offered wall-to-wall, nonstop coverage at considerable cost to the networks.
Today, it's mostly for profit broadcasting and insight, w no shortage of sources. News w/o comment doesn't make as much money. It's what the viewer, overall, wants and supports.
Looks at sports broadcasting. Ray Scott was considered a great FB broadcaster, in his day. But the basic and in a calm voice, Starr to Dowler, touchdown GB, doesn't make it today.

JMO.You've nailed the crux of the why news today isn't what it used to be. The news was considered a public service BITD and not expected to generate any profit, or even break even. It would be interesting to see what the news today would look like if the FCC mandated that one hour of prime time every night for every station in America be advertising free and considered 'The Public Service Hour".

Unfortunately, that hour would probably be "Survivor" or "The Voice" which I don't even watch. I think "The Voice" probably uses the same sound track every show. Every act seems to get the same cheers and screams from the audience as the act before.

When they first started I did, but I soon realized that they are geared to.
The BEATLES would have never made it on one of those stupid shows.
I tried "Survivor" too, but when you realize that they are NOT alone --- with a full production crew, camera men and medics on scene --- you KNOW that shit is fake too.
True entertainment on broadcast TV is as dead as Joke Bitem's brain.

With all the networks adding streaming services where you have to pay to see their product, free broadcast TV is never again going to get anything other than scraps, reruns and talking heads blathering about who knows what. Broadcast TV is headed for the graveyard. The day will come where you will never see a sporting event on free TV, and it is coming sooner than you think. Hell, I heard the PennST game this weekend is going to be streamed on PeacockTV.

Hell, I heard the PennST game this weekend is going to be streamed on PeacockTV. If you are a broadcast network, why do you sully your reputation with nothing but SHIT shows? I sure as hell won't PAY to watch their shit shows, either. ABC, CBS, and NBC have already proven they have ZERO credibility when it comes to factual news reporting. That's why FOX and NewsMax are kicking their asses, and it's a shame that America has to PAY to learn the truth.
When I have to PAY to watch sports events, that's when I'll return to the good old days of RADIO. My teams will win or lose, no matter if I can see them or not.
The Penn State/Washington game is a shitty nothing matchup. It's no wonder that game is relegated to the Nobody Gives a Shit category on a Nobody Cares network.
The country's most watched game this weekend will probably be LSU/alabama, shown on a broadcast network. We already know that ABC will be cheering for the bumpkins, but I can't control that.

I just turned on MSLSD and holy smokes, these people are certifiable lunatics. The level of hatred and lies is incredible. I had to almost immediately turn it off. These people live in perpetual rage. They live in their coastal urban bubble and refuse to comprehend that people who disagree with them between the coasts disagree with them.

JMO.Ray Scott was great, and if memory serves me correctly, he did it all by himself. I believe he called all the Packer games, but to listen to him, you never heard bias or favoritism.
