I’ve tried the discussion angle and receive the same types of responses (not listening, consideration of my viewpoint, etc) that you’re complaining about with me. And you can say that it is you not wanting to waste your time, and that’s fine. I’m free to draw my own conclusions from that, aren’t I?

I enjoy the same conversation that you do. And I don’t enjoy cross examining people. But when I start smelling bullshit, that’s a natural consequence. It’s as if someone doesn’t have the ability to say, “You know…I hadn’t considered that possibility…so I might have to look at this differently.” They’d rather twist in the wind, start name calling, become a patronizing douche (of which we’re ALL guilty…including you and me both), or otherwise employ any number of tactics rather than self reflection of one’s own position.

I’ll absolutely listen to what you say. But if I hear you say something, and later come along and say something completely the opposite of what you said before….is it your suggestion that I shouldn’t say…”Wait…that’s different from what you said previously.”?

My suggestion is you learn how to listen to understand, not necessarily to reply. If you believe it’s your place to fact check others, and look up something they said at another time, be my guest. If you think it fosters communication and understanding, go for it.

Personally, I think you would be served better by talking to people and not at them. And if that doesn’t work, either continue trading insults, or limit your interactions with those particular people.

Please see my comment concerning being a patronizing douche. It isn’t a question of it being my place or for it being anyone’s place. This is a discussion forum. Things will be discussed. I understand very well what points are being made, or attempted to be made. Alas, those points aren’t made in a vacuum.

That requires the appropriate likewise behavior from the “people”. Such as when an honest discussion about the motivations behind why particular facts being included in a high school curriculum turns into a condescending lecture about how I should be talking to people instead of talking at them.

Despite the toxicity of this place, I’ve offered to tone it down. I get ignored. We ALL could use more of the “talking to, but not at” mantra, but you don’t do a whole lot of preaching to the folks who might actually listen to you. So the rest of it rings pretty hollow. Enjoy your day.

I disagree with you there. There’s at least one poster who has specifically cited you as of the highest respect, and his behavior is as bad or worse than anyone. You can certainly exert a certain amount of control, at the very least a word of condemnation exerted in an even handed way will go significantly further than you think.

I’m not telling you to play nursemaid, but if everyone laments the shitty behavior that occurs here, relying on Walt to enforce the TOS to try to effect a modicum of civility clearly doesn’t work.

Perhaps a word on a more regular basis as to the way things are handled here might, over time, tone down the BS.
