Congratulations Oklahoma. OU 5 UF 4, it was a great series. Was just going to start a thread, but you beat me to it. Great series and Florida has one hell of a team. Congrats to the Gators as well. Both teams are young. It wouldn't surprise me to see both teams back in the final next year. UF needs an additional Amanda Lorenz and a few freshmen to make their sophomore jump just to get through the SEC, but the ultimate goal will again be the national championship in 2018.

UF is losing 3 seniors, Gourley/McLean/Herndon, and is picking up 6 freshmen for the 2018 campaign: floridagators.com/news/2016/11/9/softball-gators-announce-the-addition-of-six-signees-to-program.aspxKatie Chronister is a top pitcher who came in for the 17 season. She's a lefty and will likely replace Gourley as a sophomore. Aleshia Ocasio could return to the circle as a senior too. If one of the new players is another Amanda Lorenz, UF will definitely be in contention for the national championship in 18. This from floridagators.com: Walton, as he does annually, also signed one of the top incoming freshman classes in the country, with a duo of current U19 Team USA stars on the way in shortstop Hannah Adams (Georgia) and pitcher Natalie Lugo (California), plus a pair of power-hitters in first baseman/catcher Danielle Romanello (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Jordan Matthews (California). EDIT 2.15.2018: From what I've seen so far, Hannah Adams is the real deal both hitting and fielding except at 2nd base as Nicole Dewitt moved to 3rd base, Jordan Matthews is going to be a monster hitter, and Danielle Romanello is going to be a special hitter and defender. I'm sure Natalie Lugo will prove herself too, but I haven't seen her pitch yet. In the hitting department, it looks like UF has picked up two hitters who could have the impact of Amanda Lorenz. That's more than enough to get UF back to the WCWS with a chance to win their 3rd national championship in 5 years. All the Gators will have to do is to keep an ultra talented and experienced Oklahoma team from 3peating and winning their 4th national championship in 6 years. UF is probably the only team built that can beat Oklahoma in the final series showdown.

The Gators are a big draw for WCWS softball on TV:
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Gators softball team in the Women's College World Series is a big draw for TV.
Florida's series-clinching win in Game 3 against Michigan in 2015 averaged 2.27 million viewers, the second-highest rated softball game in ESPN history. The Florida-Oklahoma championship series this week delivered big numbers, too. Oklahoma won both games to win its second consecutive national title. The Gators' 7-5 loss to the Sooners in Game 1 on Monday night -- a 17-inning affair and now the longest game in Women's College World Series finals history -- averaged a total live audience of 1.68 million, the highest-rated Game 1 in WCWS history. The previous Game 1 record was in 2015 when the Gators faced Michigan.
The game peaked in the 16th inning with more than 2.1 million viewers tuning in according to ESPN.
Meanwhile, Tuesday night's Game 2 averaged 1.7 million viewers and a 1.1 final rating according to SportsMediaWatch.com. How popular are the Gators on TV in the WCWS? The Gators have played in five of the 10 highest-rated WCWS games in history since ESPN began televising the event in 1990.
While the Gators are a winning draw for TV audiences, the game's popularity is also on the rise. Five of the 10 largest WCWS audiences on TV have come in the past three years.
For perspective on how popular college softball has become, the average audience of 1.68 million for Monday's record-setting Game 1 ranked higher than more than 200 college football games from last season, including such matchups as Arizona-Arizona State (1.67 million), North Carolina-N.C. State (1.38), Kentucky-Louisville (1.56), Florida State-Boston College (1.15) Army-Notre Dame (1.52) and Tennessee-South Carolina (1.52).

Kelly Barnhill wins Espy for Best Female Collegiate Athlete: floridagators.com/news/2017/7/12/softball-barnhill-receives-espy-for-best-female-collegiate-athlete.aspxLOS ANGELES – Sophomore Kelly Barnhill added another postseason award late Wednesday evening as she took home the 2017 ESPY for Best Female Collegiate Athlete during an awards celebration at the Microsoft Theater. The Marietta, Ga., native became the first player in program history to receive an ESPY award. Also on the ballot for the award was Stanford's Inky Ajanaku (volleyball), West Virginia's Kadeisha Buchanan (soccer), Washington's Kelsey Plum (basketball) and Maryland's Zoe Stukenberg (lacrosse). This past season Barnhill helped lead the Gators back to the Women's College World Series with national leading marks in earned run average (0.51) and strikeouts per seven innings (13.0).

UF picked up 11 of the 13 first place votes to become the SEC coaches favorite to win the 2018 SEC championship. The Gators are loaded enough to make a run at the national championship to boot. Hopefully, it won't be an OU team again that is basically playing at home with their close proximity to Oklahoma City which was a huge home crowd advantage: floridagators.com/news/2018/1/16/softball-sec-announces-2018-preseason-coaches-poll.aspx?path=softballUF is going to face a good ooc schedule, see post immediately above, and will be battle tested by the deep and talented SEC.

After getting a tune up tonight at home against North Florida, the #2 Gators travel to play 3 games this weekend at #16/#19 Louisiana Lafayette, aka the University of Louisiana. UF will be playing a team that has been a consistent softball winner over the last few seasons. It should be a good chance to improve on the road in a matchup UF might expect just about any time when traveling against solid SEC competition. To be sure, the Rajun Cajuns have had this series circled since their schedule was announced. Winning the weekend series against #2 UF at home would strongly validate their season while playing their usual Sun Belt schedule. The Rajun Cajuns have scheduled a good ooc to make up for the Sunbelt Conference not being top notch in softball. My guess is UF wins a close series 2-1. It's hard to sweep on the road against really good competition.

#2 UF beat North Florida 9-0 in 5 innings. Kelly Barnhill pitched a 12 strikeout no hitter. Only one NF player got on base being HBP in the 4th inning or Barnhill would have had a perfect game.
Freshmen showing out against North Florida:
Hannah Adams starting at 2nd base - one hit and scored a run Jordan Matthews DP - no hits because she was walked 3 times Danielle Romanello PH - double in only at bat scoring 2 runs
UF's record advanced to 6-0.
Next up: at #16/#19 Louisiana Lafayette Rajun Cajuns for a weekend 3 game series.

Gators Sweep Saturday Doubleheader at Louisiana Lafayette: floridagators.com/news/2018/2/17/softball-no-2-florida-shuts-out-no-16-19-louisiana-in-doubleheader.aspxThe Rajun Cajuns hadn't been shutout since February 18, 2017 when Alabama did it. It was the first time since April 6, 2007 that the Rajun Cajuns had been shutout in back to back games. The Gators break out the brooms at 2 PM EST on Sunday afternoon. The Ragin Cajuns have large and lively crowds, attendance 2572, so it won't be easy getting the sweep. I'm guessing Kelly Barnhill gets the ball again with Aleshia Ocasio coming on in relief, but Kelly did have 120 pitches on Saturday. Maybe sophomore Katie Chronister and true freshman Natalie Lugo pitch this one to see how they do on the road against a good team with a good home crowd making a lot of noise.
