Gators Sweep Saturday Doubleheader at Louisiana Lafayette: floridagators.com/news/2018/2/17/softball-no-2-florida-shuts-out-no-16-19-louisiana-in-doubleheader.aspxThe Rajun Cajuns hadn't been shutout since February 18, 2017 when Alabama did it. It was the first time since April 6, 2007 that the Rajun Cajuns had been shutout in back to back games. The Gators break out the brooms at 2 PM EST on Sunday afternoon. The Ragin Cajuns have large and lively crowds, attendance 2572, so it won't be easy getting the sweep. I'm guessing Kelly Barnhill gets the ball again with Aleshia Ocasio coming on in relief, but Kelly did have 120 pitches on Saturday. Maybe sophomore Katie Chronister and true freshman Natalie Lugo pitch this one to see how they do on the road against a good team with a good home crowd making a lot of noise. Probably be unranked next week, why do you guys schedule so soft?

Playing as crappy as they did yesterday against that substandard competition in Boston University and New Mexico State out in New Mexico, really just nobodies in college softball, the Sooners should be unranked too. That might give them a wake up call if it is possible with OU's soft schedule.

It took the Ragin Cajuns 11 innings, but they upset UF 4-3 to avoid the sweep. The Gators had taken the lead 3-2 in the top of the 11th when true freshman 2nd baseman Hannah Adams hit a double to score Aleshia Ocasio. Ocasio then allowed a walk off 2 run homer in the bottom of the 11th to the Rajun Cajuns to end the game. Barnhill had started the game before being relieved by Ocasio who had pitched very well until allowing the walk off 2 run homer: floridagators.com/news/2018/2/18/softball-no-16-louisiana-edges-no-2-florida-in-extra-innings.aspxI had thought Katie Chronister and Nicole Logo would have gotten the ball today so this loss is a bit unexpected since Louisiana Lafayette beat the Gators best two pitchers. Since UF didn't sweep, I'd have preferred that the youngsters be given a chance against a good team on the road. To sum up the weekend, it had the feel of things to come in SEC play. You just don't usually go to a good/ranked SEC team and sweep. Louisiana Lafayette is a good team that will do well this season. UF will get over the walk off loss. The Gators are a great team with too much experience to let a loss like this bother them.

After getting a tune up tonight at home against North Florida, the #2 Gators travel to play 3 games this weekend at #16/#19 Louisiana Lafayette, aka the University of Louisiana. UF will be playing a team that has been a consistent softball winner over the last few seasons. It should be a good chance to improve on the road in a matchup UF might expect just about any time when traveling against solid SEC competition. To be sure, the Rajun Cajuns have had this series circled since their schedule was announced. Winning the weekend series against #2 UF at home would strongly validate their season while playing their usual Sun Belt schedule. The Rajun Cajuns have scheduled a good ooc to make up for the Sunbelt Conference not being top notch in softball. My guess is UF wins a close series 2-1. It's hard to sweep on the road against really good competition. I was mostly right. After winning 4-0 and 9-0, the final game loss was an 11 inning 4-3 close loss. The result is the same as expected at 2-1 for the weekend against a good team on the road in a hostile environment. This is the kind of series that will pay dividends down the road when the Gators face tough competition in hostile environments. The weakness for the Rajun Cajuns moving forward is that they have only one ace on the staff. They saved her for the Sunday game where she pitched a complete 184 pitch game for the win. I can't imagine putting your ace through that wear down process just to salvage the final game of the home stand. UF hit the other ULL pitchers pretty good and had the ace beat until Aleshia Ocasio allowed the 2 run walk off homer in the bottom of the 11th inning. UF freshmen update: Hannah Adams had the run scoring double in the top half of the 11th inning in the final game plus played very in the field at 2nd base. Jordan Matthews had opportunities to stretch Gator leads, but failed to do so. She has a good eye and draws walks to increase her OBP. Daneille Romanello failed at 4 of 5 PH attempts with 2 LOB. Adams performed better against ULL, but Matthews & Romanello are such natural hitters that they will catch up to the better competition as they gain experience.

With the way OU stunk up the weekend losing 4-3 to UR Boston University before winning a close 2-0 game against UR New Mexico State, the Gators should advance to the #1 position in the polls based on playing the better competition at 16/19 ULL, but likely won't as OU will be given the benefit of the doubt as defending champion with such an outstanding returning ball club. Oregon at #3 lost a 1-0 game to #15 Ole Miss in Puerto Vallerta, Mexico. Just guessing, the polls won't change this week with the top 3 each picking up a loss.

Florida 12 Maryland 0
Aleshia Ocasio threw a 1 hitter in game one today against Maryland. If the Terrapins had dreams of another upset of UF like last season, those dreams were crushed.
Kelly Barnhill is the starter in game two against Iowa State. At the end of the 1st inning, the Gators lead the Cyclones 2-0.

Florida 8 Iowa State 0
Kelly Barnhill pitched her second no hitter of the season in an 8-0 win. It might have been a perfect game too, but I'm not certain if no one reached base. I'll check the box score and recap when it's posted.
On Sunday, Iowa State gets a second opportunity with the Gators followed by Georgia Southern.

Checked the box score, Kelly Barnhill walked two batters so her 8-0 no hit win against Iowa State was not a perfect game.
The Gators combined outscored Maryland and Iowa State 20-0. This is going to be a fun team to watch develop.

Sunday Game 1:
Florida 3 Iowa State 0
The Gators shutout the Cyclones by a combined 11-0 in the 2 games. Iowa State dropped to 8-7. UF advanced to 15-1.
Next Up: Georgia Southern to close the week. The Eagles are a good team at 10-3 and are capable of giving the Gators a good game. UF then travels to Fullerton, Ca. for the Judi Garman Classic starting Thursday. The Gators will face Loyola Marymount, Cal State Fullerton, Michigan State, UNC Charlotte, and Baylor. The following week UF opens SEC play in Gainesville against Kentucky.

Sunday Game 2: Florida 8 Georgia Southern 0 floridagators.com/boxscore.aspx?path=softball&id=13984Kelly Barnhill is 7-0. She pitched her second no hitter of the weekend. This game was also a perfect game. Kelly faced the minimum of 15 batters for a 5 inning win striking out 11 along with 1 fly out and 3 ground outs. UF's record advanced to 16-1. There is no doubt the Gators will remain #1 in at least one of the polls this week. Next Up: Loyola Marymount and Cal State Fullerton on Thursday in the Judi Garman Classic. The Friday games will be against Michigan State and Charlotte. The Saturday game will be against the unbeaten Baylor Bears.
