Simpson Red Hawks prepare for football season with intrasquad scrimmage REDDING, Calif. — This photo from Thursday, April 18, 2024, shows Simpson University's Red Hawks Football team practicing. (KRCR) Football season never stops, and it's about to start at Simpson University in Redding—the only four-year college football program in the Northstate. The Red Hawks will play their first competitive season this fall, and to assess where they are now, Head Coach Shawn Daniel has an intrasquad scrimmage scheduled for Saturday night, April 20. He says the program has come a long way in less than a year. “The first year, we brought in 60 guys; had a lot of success. We brought in about 15 mid-year transfers to increase our number so everything’s a lot more competitive," Daniel told KRCR. "We’re also getting a little older, a little bigger, and that’s really exciting, that part. No spring last year, so now that we have a spring, we’re practicing, we’re getting at it and it’s been a lot of fun. This time, we were just recruiting; not even coaching.” Simpson's offense will scrimmage against the defense at the field at Foothill High School in Palo Cedro at 7 p.m. -- To report errors or issues with this article please email the editorial team. krcrtv.com/news/local/simpson-red-hawks-prepare-for-football-season-with-intrasquad-scrimmage#

This is an exciting time here. Our first local four year university college football program. With Chico St and Cal Poly Humboldt having dropped football and no other NAIA teams in Ca offering football, Simpson will be the only one in the state north of the Bay Area and Sacramento regions. The football team will be in a league of teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and western Montana. I can’t wait to support a local team in person. Quite a few young men in the Central Valley and other states nearby have signed on here instead of going the JC route.

They have to use a high school field?
That's IMPRESSIVE!
They need to schedule Slippery Rock for an instant classic.

There will be an on campus football field by the time the season starts. It’s not like the JC field and stadium are available. The high school mentioned is slightly bigger than the university. As to ooc football opponents, I have no idea who they will play.

I have kinda kept up with Slippery Rock since I first became aware of them in the mid-70's.

I have kinda kept up with Slippery Rock since I first became aware of them in the mid-70's.I’ve heard of slippery rock from about the same time. Maybe Saturday night live humor or something… Our local program is just starting out. As to not knowing who they might play ooc I really don’t as there are no other NAIA level schools that play football in California so playing teams in our conference for all other sports is out. Maybe we play only in conference schools as there may be enough to play a whole season. Our footprint is similar to the Big Sky conference where I think Sacramento St and UC Davis are the only Ca members at the old D1AA level in that area. Tightening our bonding with small town and rural Oregon, Washington , Idaho, Montana is something we like here in this part of Ca. Visions of ooc future shots against Sac St and UC Davis do exist. Portland St too.
