Bama, UF, and UNL advanced in the evening round. Bama and UF were tied for first in the evening and overall.
UF's best gymnast, Bridget Sloan, fell off the balance beam and got a 9.2. Luckily, there were 5 better scores to count. The Gators have also done better on the floor, Kytra Hunter and Bridget Sloan are both capable of hitting 10s, so I'm expecting something around 198 for UF in the Super 6 tomorrow.
Harry, there are 4 SEC and 2 Big 12 teams in the Super 6. The B1G and PAC 12 took it on the chin today. I wouldn't be surprised to see it come down to bama, UF, and OU, but it looks like UGALY, LSU, and UNL are capable of pulling out a win. The Super 6 scores will likely be razor close. It may take a low 198s score to win the national championship.
Final Super 6 qualifying rankings for both sessions:
Team Standings
Session Place Team Score
1 1 Oklahoma 197.500 1 2 Georgia 197.300 1 3 LSU 197.100 1 4 Stanford 196.600 1 5 Michigan 196.425 1 6 Illinois-Champaign 195.800
2 1 Alabama 197.650 2 1 Florida 197.650 2 3 Nebraska 197.100 2 4 Utah 197.025 2 5 UCLA 197.000 2 6 Penn State 194.825

Sounds like a hungry group of chomping Gators to me. The Bridget Sloan fall has apparently ignited the team. Bottom line, there is room for Bridget Sloan and Kytra Hunter to both put up better scores. Should that happen along with the others performing as well as they did last night, my money is on UF going back to back.
Bama has a huge home crowd advantage with the Birmingham location, but home crowd didn't stop UF from winning at UCLA last season. With that said, bama is the only team to have beaten UF head to head this season with the location at bama and then again in Atlanta as bama won the SEC Championship while UF finished second. I think UF has a bit of a chip on their shoulder going into tonights final:
Saturday April 19, 2014 Sloan Falls and Gets Back Up, Gators Move On to Super Six
Gators sophomore Bridget Sloan rebounded with a strong performance on floor after a fall on beam.
Scott Carter By SCOTT CARTER GatorZone.com Senior Writer
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In her two seasons on the UF gymnastics team, Bridget Sloan has proven many things, one being that she is nearly unflappable.
Sloan is Florida's free spirit, the one that keeps everyone else relaxed and in fun mode. But when it's time to perform, Sloan turns on the fire as one of the elite gymnasts in the country.
So you can probably imagine what was going through her mind when she fell off the beam Friday night here at the NCAA Championship semifinals. In an instant Sloan's quest to repeat as NCAA all-around champion and beam champion vanished.
It also cast a temporary cloud over the defending national champion Gators as they attempted to finish in the top three Friday to advance to Saturday's Super Six.
"I know it was a very, very big disappointment for Bridget,'' Gators coach Rhonda Faehn said. "She was pretty distraught after that beam routine."
Former teammate Marissa King, in her first season as a student coach, could see Sloan's disappointment.
King took Sloan back to the locker room for a brief chat. She tried to console Sloan and remind her that this was a team competition. Individual titles are nice -- King won the 2011 NCAA vault title -- but a team title means more.
King's pep talk hit home for Sloan.
"Looking back on it, how many people really remember who won the all-around last year? But everyone remembers that in 2013, the Florida Gators won their first NCAA title,'' Sloan said afterward. "It's one of those things that's hard to digest, but you learn from it. Tonight was a huge learning curve for me.
"I'm not perfect but there are things that I have to do to make my routines to the best of my ability. Obviously I was a little off tonight, but tomorrow, I'm ready. We are so fired up about tomorrow. We want to make a statement that not only are we the University of Florida, but that we fight."
The Gators certainly fought Friday, advancing to the Super Six along with Alabama and Nebraska. The trio joins Oklahoma, Georgia and LSU in the Super Six and a shot at the national championship Saturday night.
The Gators answered fast after Sloan's uncharacteristic fall that resulted in a 9.200 score. Mackenzie Caquatto stepped on beam after Sloan and scored 9.900; Kytra Hunter finished Florida's rotation with a 9.850 score.
Sloan's fall would not count in the team score.
"I knew I had to go out there and be cool, calm and collected,'' Hunter said. "I'm glad I had a stellar routine. We have each other's backs."
Sloan proved that last year in the Super Six when she nailed a 9.950 on beam to help the Gators overcome two falls on the apparatus and claim the program's first national title.
As Sloan tried to regroup in the chat with King, Faehn talked to Caquatto and Hunter prior to their routines to stabilize Florida's focus.
Message received.
"We always feel like our team rises to the occasion when it's a challenging situation,'' Faehn said. "I was really proud of them."
With Alabama in front entering the final rotation, Sloan did her part on floor with a 9.900 score. Florida and Alabama tied with a team score of 197.650. The Gators earned the tiebreaker to keep their same rotation (vault, bars, beam and floor) on Saturday.
For the first time all season a Florida gymnast didn't win the all-around title, but that didn't matter.
Imperfections and all, Florida's season is alive for another day. The day they wanted to make it to all season -- the final day of team competition. This is the third consecutive season the Gators have advance to the Super Six.
Senior Alaina Johnson posted a 39.600 all-around score to place second overall and provide a big boost Friday.
"We don't have to be perfect,'' Johnson said. "We had mistakes that we of course didn't want, but what was good about it was that we came back strong. That shows what kind of team we have."
The Gators will return to the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex Arena on Saturday with the goal of claiming a second consecutive national title.
If that happens, Sloan likely will play a key role.
She did Friday, too, just not according to script.
"I definitely did not have a good night,'' she said. "I learn from every meet. As a team, we really came together. I definitely would have handled it much differently a few years ago.
"That's what gymnastics has taught me. You're not going to be perfect. We started in January. It is now April. It is a very long season and you win some and you lose some. Individually, that's how I look at it. But as a team, this is a team competition. You could tell tonight we wanted it."

What a great finish to the Super 6 national championship meet:
Team Standings
Place Team Score
1 Florida 198.175 1 Oklahoma 198.175 3 LSU 197.600 4 Alabama 197.550 5 Georgia 197.050 6 Nebraska 196.500
There is a tie for the national championship between Florida and Oklahoma. This is the way it looked going into the final rotation with LSU and Nebraska already completed:
1. LSU 197.600 2. Nebraska 196.500 3. Alabama 148.700 (Beam) 4. Oklahoma 148.625 (Vault) 5. Florida 148.550 (Floor) 6. Georgia 147.525 (Bars)
Alabama finally caved to the pressure as the tide had two to fall off the beam. The net result is bama had to take a fall score. It dropped the tide from 1st to 4th.
Oklahoma scored 49.550 on the vault.
Florida scored 49.625 on the floor.
The results produced the tie between Florida and Oklahoma.
It's shared, but it's back to back national championships for Florida. Go Gators!
Harry, congrats to the sooners as well.
The individual championships will be competed for tomorrow.
The meet will be shown on ESPNU next Thursday night, the 24th.

Saturday April 19, 2014 BACK-TO-BACK: Gators Win Second Consecutive National Title; Co-Champs with Oklahoma
The Gators captured a second consecutive national championship on Saturday in dramatic fashion.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Gators avoided talk of a repeat prior to their trip here for the NCAA Gymnastics Championships.
They wanted the 2014 team to stand on its own. The Gators certainly did that Saturday night.
They stood at the podium holding the national championship trophy after a dramatic comeback on the floor to tie Oklahoma for the national title.
The Gators won the 2013 national title -- the first in program history -- while the Sooners were runner-up.
Florida needed a strong floor performance to close out last year's title and the same was true Saturday.
The Gators stood in third place behind Oklahoma and host Alabama entering the final rotation.
However, two Crimson Tide gymnasts fell on beam to wipe out Alabama's national title bid.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma finished vault and posted a final team score of 198.175. The Gators had two final turns on the floor left when Oklahoma's final score flashed.
Kytra Hunter and Bridgette Caquatto both needed to score 9.950s on floor to tie the Sooners and earn a share of the title (there is not a tiebreaker in the Super Six).
Hunter was first and got her 9.950. Caquatto then went out and did the same.
For a the next few minutes drama unfolded as officials determined if a tiebreaker was needed. It was not.
Turns out the Gators earned a share of the title with their nerve-wracking comeback Florida fans won't forget for some time.

Florida gymnastics ties Oklahoma to repeat as national champion

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The top-ranked Florida Gators defended their national gymnastics championship Saturday, and shared the title stage.
In an historic finish, Florida and Oklahoma tied for the title with identical scores of 198.175 at the Super Six finals of the NCAA Gymnastics Championships at Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex.
A year earlier, Florida captured its first national gymnastics title, becoming the first school to break through and join the big four programs — Utah, UCLA, Georgia and Alabama — that had captured every national championship since the NCAA began staging a title event in the sport in 1982.
Now UF has welcomed Oklahoma to the club in the first title tie in the event's history. The Gators were happy to win it again, and happy to share the glory.
"Not only did we get this incredible score, but there's no reason to break a tie when both teams did phenomenal," UF's Bridget Sloan said. "Being up here with Oklahoma, it's incredible. All of us at Florida, we wouldn't have wanted to tie with any other team.
"Not only are we repeating, but we're making history again. When has there ever been a tie?"
UF trailed both Alabama and Oklahoma going into the final rotation and needed big scores on floor exercise and some help from the Crimson Tide to get into the hunt.
Alabama had falls on its first and last balance beam rotations, opening the door for UF and Oklahoma. The Sooners scored 49.550 on vault in their final turn, but Florida closed even stronger.
Florida got the big scores to pull it off, with Kytra Hunter and Bridgette Caquatto closing out a 49.625 rotation with 9.95 routines.
In addition to winning the title, UF defeated Alabama for the first time in four tries this season (including a tie in Friday's semifinals) and beat the Crimson Tide in the state of Alabama for the first time in 29 years.
“They just competed with so much passion and energy,” Florida coach Rhonda Faehn said. “Just all-in for everybody on the team. That’s what we ask of them. It was an incredible experience for this team to be able to repeat the national championship. It was just so surreal last year to win and then to be able to repeat this year, I’m still kind of in a fog about it.”
The Gators had defeated the Sooners in January in the O’Connell Center, winning 197.875-197.225.

It's been a long time coming for the OU women and this is their first national title. Way to go, girls! Pretty good year for OU in gymnastics; women won the title and the men finished second.
