Made Chicken Fried Steaks last night. Black pepper gravy, pinto beans, cornbread, tossed salad, and corn on the cob (from last summers garden). Sweet tea to wash it down. Watermelon for dessert. Vidalia onions are in the stores now, so I took 4 and ran them through the blender, brushed the juice on the cube steaks and let them marinate overnight, then dipped each in an egg-milk mix, rolled it in flour (with salt and pepper added), redipped and refloured before cooking. Made my tummy smile.

My LDL was tested at 95mg/dl, HDL was 55mg/dl, and Triglycerides were 140mg/dl. My doctor says all is well for now.

I'm cursed with (genetically) low HDL. Two of my uncles had heart attacks in their mid-60s, despite being physically fit, athletic guys.

I'm cursed with (genetically) low HDL. Two of my uncles had heart attacks in their mid-60s, despite being physically fit, athletic guys. There are very few foods that, eaten in moderation, are really bad for ones health. I eat ham or pork maybe once every 2 or 3 weeks. Red meat is almost always grilled, so the grease cooks out of it. Cornbread is healthy food, and I use real butter instead of chemially engineered margarine. When the tomatoes are ripe in the garden I have BLTs, but bacon is never on the table from fall to summer. Fresh fruit, fresh or frozen veggies and almost no canned and processed food. I haven't had white bread in 20 years. Maybe 2 or 3 colas a month. Seldom drink beer or any other alcohol. I use an elliptical one hour each day, work in the yard, work with the horses, and drink lots of water (distilled, not tap). I had put on a few pounds with my recent surgeries and inactivity, but am under 200 lbs now and well on my way to 180. Want to come down and go a few rounds? Any time you want.

Any time you want.Cowboy, I workout on my old Nordic Track and universal gym 3X per week. Doesn't do much for my low HDL, however. When the weather is nice-- as it has been lately-- I try to skate 2 laps around Washington Park-- about 5 miles. I average about 12-15 mph when I skate. True story. I was skating my usual 5 miles last Tuesday. Second time out this year. Very hot day, and I felt dizzy, but I always force myself to skate through at my regular pace. Noticed that morning as I was driving to work that I had a visual field deficit in my right eye. To make a long story short, I had a retinal stroke! It was confirmed by a retianl specialist last Friday-- photography and perfusion scan. My vision is back in the ey-- but there is a faint shadow. Had my carotid arteries checked Tuesday morning, and they are clean. Now I need to see a cardiologist to figure out why my cardiac output is down. So, no. No boxing for me this spring. In fact, now I'm afraid to skate laps.

My LDL was tested at 95mg/dl, HDL was 55mg/dl, and Triglycerides were 140mg/dl. My doctor says all is well for now. Is that with or without statins? My doctor has me on 40mg atorvastatin each night. This is a change from 80mg Pravastatin a few months ago. Also, I take 1000mg fish oil capsule twice a day. The most important is that I eat fairly healthy and exercise regularly. 1 hour daily or two 30 minute sessions at a good pace is essential. I hit the elliptical at 6am with the news, then a large bowl of Cheerios with 2 bananas for breakfast.
