Florida's baseball and track and field teams pulled out a tight race for the SEC All-Sports Award given annually by the Halifax Media Group.
Florida went into the final weekend of the SEC sports season trailing Georgia in the overall standings. But the Gator baseball team finished off its special SEC season with two wins at Tennessee to clinch the outright title Friday.
On Sunday, the Florida men's track team finished third, one spot ahead of Georgia, while the women finished second to Georgia's fifth.
As a result, Florida finished with a total score of 0.7716 to Georgia's 0.7123. Texas A&M finished third in the overall standings while Alabama was fourth and Kentucky fifth.
The scores are computed by taking the points earned in each sport (14 for first, 13 for second, etc.) and dividing them by the number of teams participating in those sports. Florida finished with a total of 161 points, overcoming unusually-poor showings in football and men's golf.
The SEC All-Sports Award is presented by Halifax Media Group, which owns The Sun and 31 other newspapers around the South. The SEC presented the award until 1994 when the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group took over the presentation and calculations. This is the third year Halifax has presented the award.
It was a clean sweep for the Gators for the 24th time. Florida is the only school to sweep the overall, men's and women's titles. The overall title is the 24th for Florida while the women won for the 21st time and the men for the 18th time.
Florida won 14 straight overall titles before Georgia won in 2005-06. Florida has won each one since.
In the men's competition, Florida edged Georgia by .0055. Alabama was third. In the women's competition, Texas A&M finished second to UF with Georgia third.
Florida won SEC titles in men's basketball, baseball, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving and women's indoor track and field.
