Classic NCAA selective enforcement. No doubt. Remember, too that UNC admitted wrong doing (although nothing to the extent that McCants claims) and the NCAA disagreed with their findings and chose not to punish them.

What a joke...Carolina is a big basketball school and 90% of the NCAA's revenues come from the NCAA basketball tournament, so no big surprise that they treated them with kid gloves.

1. there is absolutely no doubt about a huge perception problem for the ncaa, if unc is truly getting, in essence, a pass on this, although to be fair, at least what i recall about this is that it was more focused on football players getting academic assistance than the hoops guys. maybe i'm wrong on that. the ncaa makes almost no $$ on cfb anymore. unc being automatically absent from march madness? that better not make a difference. 2. that said, it's kind of unfair to say 'look, unc hoops hasn't been punished and here's proof re mccants.' that news literally just came out days ago. now if the ncaa doesn't follow up on this, or the the unc coaches/administration continue to say they did everything right, then that is an issue. significant one. 3. mccants does carry some fault in this. i know there is huge pressure to follow along when you're told to take cupcake classes in order to stay eligible, but the student still bears some responsibility here. 4. the adults bear more responsibility. 5. saw an article last week about an ou (ohio, not oklahoma) sports professor doing a year long project in europe, studying their athletic system, which is completely separate from the higher university system. america remains the only place where top 'amateur' athletes are expected to go to class and complete minimum college standards, a tradition he says began in the early 20th century when college execs noticed how popular football was with the public, and began building large stadiums in response. you wonder if the business of college hoops/football are too big to change now... it would be a radical shift. but if the systems stay as they are... if playing college sports means you need to be a college student in good standing, then it needs to apply to everyone, all of them time. mark scott tosu 81

That UNC tutor drew a road map that wasn't fully followed. Again, jmo. And I agree that the players do have some responsibility.

No. Bruce Pearl hosted a recruit who was on an unofficial visit. That would have been a minor violation, but when questioned about it by the NCAA and the UT AD, Pearl lied about it. Pearl also told others that were there to lie, and asked the recruit and his father to lie. Further NCAA investigation found numerous illegal contacts by Pearl and his staff. The illegal contacts are why UT got put on probation. The lies are why Pearl received a "show cause" penalty. If only Pearl had raped a few kids, you would be defending him.

That UNC tutor drew a road map that wasn't fully followed. Again, jmo. And I agree that the players do have some responsibility. ditto. not a direct correlation, but the o'bannon trial starting this week in federal court could have some earth-shattering consequences to college sports, paving a path for a true minor league/non-academic requirement option for football/basketball (and baseball?), and backing the university system back to a true amateur status. one other interesting tidbit that i've seen here re: osu. there was no extension for the buckeye club deadline on getting season tickets back in the spring, but the tickets the osu alumni association get to sell is a different story. used to be that buckeye club members weren't eligible for the alumni ticket lottery. now that's changed and we are eligible. also, the deadline to get into the lottery has been extended twice. never seen that before either. maybe it's a hiccup and nothing more. just makes me wonder if even as fervent a fan base as osu's may be approaching a point where they can't or won't pay $85, $116 (va tech game) or $156 (um game) per ticket to attend a game. mark scott tosu 81
