I had a hand crank one. Looked like wooden bucket with an inner stainless cylinder. The ice and rock salt go between the wood and the metal. Took about 20 minutes of hand cranking. They have electric ones for lazy people like willie and burnedbrain.

Plus with my 10 and 12 hour work days, the last thing I want to do is be crankin on some bucket. Guess I'm going to have to go shopping. I HATE shopping! Its a PITA!

Yeah, I wish the one I had was electric. I got it for free so I didn't complain.

Growing up my brother and I would be tasked to turn the crank on the ice cream maker. Being the youngest, I would turn the crank first because it was easy. He would sit on the maker (on a piece of cardboard to keep his butt dry) while I cranked. When the ice cream started to set and the cranking got more difficult we would change places and he would finish the job. Best part is we got to share the mixer blade after and get to enjoy the ice cream first. My dad would drive to the ice house and buy a block of ice, then take an ice pick and chip it into smaller pieces to fit in the maker.

We used one of those wooden hand-crank ice cream jobbers with rock salt when I was a boy. One of my favorites was black walnut-- made with nuts from the black walnut trees in my grandfather's yard. It was a lot of work-- especially cracking those damned black walnuts with a hammer-- but worth the trouble. Black Walnut shells-- one of the hardest substances known to man...

I actually had a hand crank ice cream maker when I was a kid. It made the best ice cream! I can just picture the stories that you guys have told. Two little boys on a porch on a hot summers day! As a Mom, that makes me smile. And Black walnuts. I've harvested black walnuts and from experience they have a bitter musky taste. You must have had to use a ton of sugar! If you bake them the shell is easier to crack. At least the ones in upstate NY do. The EX's parents showed me where to find them.

They taste good and remind me of my childhood visits to my grandparents, who had a black walnut tree. Of course, if you happen to get some rotten ones, they might taste bitter. Do you remember that song "Found a Peanut?" Be careful.

I want to make some homemade peach ice cream with toasted pecans in it. Does anyone know anything about the different type of ice cream makers? I'm probably going to buy a new one soon...and it will be electric. You can't but a cheap electric because the motor won't last. Cuisinart makes a number of very popular ones in the $100-$150 range that can be bought for less than $100 on Amazon. I'm working on setting up a cafe where we plan to sell store-made ice cream, (among other things,)so if you ask me again in a month or two after I've done my research on the subject I might have a lot more info for you.

I look forward to your input, Robb. I've been wanting a new maker for years since I got rid of my hand crank. Nothing quite like the homemade stuff!
