I'm probably going to buy a new one soon...and it will be electric. You can't but a cheap electric because the motor won't last. Cuisinart makes a number of very popular ones in the $100-$150 range that can be bought for less than $100 on Amazon. I'm working on setting up a cafe where we plan to sell store-made ice cream, (among other things,)so if you ask me again in a month or two after I've done my research on the subject I might have a lot more info for you. Okay, thanks. I get quite a bit of company now, so having homemade is a real treat! Well, Ruth, while you're asking about hand crank vs. electric, I hope Fred doesn't start discussing sex toys... Picked about 2 quarts of blackberries today. Last of the summer on the farm. Sunday afternoon I'm gonna make some homemade vanilla ice cream (with some ground up vanilla beans mixed in) and sprinkle the blackberries all over a big bowlful.

Growing up we had over an acre of wild blackberries. I've eaten blackberries in every conceivable dessert recipe possible including the classic you just posted.
