THAT was a collapse. secretariat... on the other hand... as long as i don't break a leg on the backstretch... i look forward to going out to stud come january. ha. mark scott tosu 81

Every time I see I am still amazed at how powerful that horse was. Once in a lifetime animal and a pretty cool story to boot. Good stuff.

Good stuff. i was 14 years old in the summer of '73, so i wasn't inside much on the weekends. but the belmont that saturday in june was truly must-see tv (luckily we had a 12 noon start for a baseball game that day), and it was amazing how much the cbs cameras had to zoom out on the backstretch just to see the rest of the field. jaw-dropping performance. mark scott tosu 81

Why in the world would you leave the rail wide open for him to run through going into the first turn if you could have taken it and made him work his way all the way back around on the backstretch? Deplorable jockey work...or.....was it something else? (Not that it would have mattered).. BTW, for the first time ever, I went to see the quarter-horses run at Los Al. Holy crap, those horses are fast. 300 yards in 15 seconds from a standing start with a human on your back. Incredible. It was like going to the equine drag races.

Growing up we had a quarterhorse that was a barrel racer. That horse was lightning quick, could haul ass at full gallop and start/stop on a dime. Amazing horses.

It was like going to the equine drag races. there were only 6 horses in the race, so going wide early wasn't as bad in the belmont as it might have been for the derby, where if i recall secretariat was near last if i recall because he stayed closer to the rail til the backstretch. mark scott tosu 81
