in shocking news, the cavs, who are about to begin the eastern conference finals, did not somehow get the #1 overall pick.
the 76ers get to pick third. i've wanted de'angelo russell on the 76ers all season long. he fills a large need. he's a guard with excellent court vision who can shoot. like he's an actual good shooter. evan turner was not. michael carter williams was not. this is something the 76ers haven't had in a while. he would compliment nerlins noel and joel embiid very well. with dario saric stashed away in europe for one more year, and with more cap space by about 10000% than every other team in the league, the 76ers are on the brink of being a team infused with serious talent. not to mention the 76ers will have up to 4 first round draft picks next year. how that talent meshes together and how well they are coached remains to be seen though.
i fear the lakers might take russell at #2 though. they don't have a proven long term solution at guard either and they drafted randle last year to be their 4. the knock on okafor is that he's not a true center in that his defense is lacking a bit and this might create a conflict with randle.
reports have already surfaced that towns really wants the lakers. which makes sense. in LA, you have better marketing opportunities, better weather, better tradition and the ability to hook up with celebrities. nothing against minnesota though, who did an admirable job somehow putting tunnels to connect all their buildings so you could avoid going outside.
if i had to do a mock draft right now, i'd say:
1. twolves - okafor - towns is more proven but okafor has a higher ceiling. take okafor to avoid any potential turmoil with towns. 2. lakers - towns - can better compliment randle. know they can get a guard later in their rebuild (hello 2016 free agent russell westbrook?) 3. sixers - de'angelo russell - another talented building piece for the 2018 nba champs.

Want to recast your pick based on Embiid's foot? Tragic. no one knows the deal with embiid's foot. i think it's more of a minor/precaution thing but the media is speculating something worse b/c it's a better story. the 76ers never stated he was reinjured, just that he wasn't as healed as they hoped. it is also a strange coincidence that an injured embiid drive's up the value of the 76ers third pick b/c if the lakers are committed to russell, then teams know the 76ers are more serious about okafor now.

Hope it turns out to be just a time thing. They have a sweet foundation but they gotta be thinken about Portland's history drafting Sam Bowie & Greg Oden. yea there's always going to be a risk. especially with bigs with foot issues. yao ming is another example of a talent whose career was tragically cut short. but in the nba, you need an elite talent to win. and many say embiid has ceiling less potential. it's worth the risk.
