he wasn't a household name in college hoops, but he had a record that stood for about 60 years. bevo tossed in 113 points in a college basketball game for (then) rio grande college back in the mid 50s vs hillsdale (mi). that record stood til just 3 years ago. he also scored 116 in a game the previous year, but the ncaa wiped that out as a record because it was vs a junior college. francis averaged 48 ppg that season ('53-'54), he scored over 3200 points in just 2 years of playing varsity ball. he then played on a team that took on the harlem globetrotters for a couple years, then was drafted by the philadelphia warriors but he decided to forego a sports career, taking a factory job in eastern ohio from which he eventually retired. one of the guys who did radio play by play at my first job in zanesville knew him, and i got a chance to interview him. he could not have been more down to earth, ironic since he was still all of 6'9" tall. i heard his health had been bad for quite a while. at the time when he was playing, rio grande had less than 100 students. the notoriety he received for his play actually drew attention to the school, and enrollment started going up after he became famous. he never took any credit, but his friends claimed the school would have shut down otherwise. it is now the university of rio grande (there's a community college there too) with over 2000 students, providing an opportunity for kids in one of the poorest part of ohio to have another option for higher education. and maybe, they have that chance because of some guy named bevo playing basketball back in the dark ages of the 50's. not a bad legacy at all.

Interesting. Thanks. Didn't know that.
