... after the '15-'16 season. back to back final 4's, including that agonizing loss to duke in april in the title game. 11 straight ncaa appearances. in those 11 years, both matta/osu (5) and izzo/msu (3) have won more regular season big 10 crowns (ryan/uw have 2, including this past season). but ryan never finished lower than 4th in that span (izzo finished 7th and 6th, matta 3 5th's and a 6th). izzo's teams have gone 129-63 in league games during those 11 years, matta's 132-60, ryan's 137-55 if my math is right.
he's been a crusty old coot, his team has never ever committed a foul if you believe his reax to the officials, and his 'deal w/it' comment about sullinger after uw students stormed the floor celebrating a 71-67 upset win (jared said he got spit on if i recall) leap to mind immediately (osu would get revenge in the season finale, 93-65, in one of the best games i've ever seen a buckeye team play). but i love the story of him taking his dad to the ncaa's every year til his death a couple years ago, he's won w/teams that never, never ever had a single blue chip on the roster, and he literally put the badger hoops program on the national map during his 17 year tenure in madison. quite a legacy. he'll be missed once he hangs it up.

I thought you'd get what happens when Buckeyes think of/google Bo Rein ... bo rein... he was one of my first memories of osu football back in the mid 60s. didn't realize til i actually got to osu how good a baseball player he was too (on osu's only national title team in '66). he was a legendary scrapper, typical for ne ohio kids. there's a reason why there's still an award for most inspirational player handed out every year here in his name. you wonder how successful he would have been as a coach at lsu where he'd been hired if his life hadn't been cut way too short by that fatal plane crash.

He definitely made an impact... Some highlights from wiki:
Former teammate, and later Mayor of Columbus, Ohio, Greg Lashutka said of Rein, "He wasn't the biggest guy, but pound for pound he was tough as they come. He had that inner drive and did everything to the fullest. He could play." A continuing tradition at Ohio State is that at the end of every season, the team votes to award one teammate the "Bo Rein Most Inspirational Player Award."
Following every season, the NC State football team awards the "Bo Rein Award" to a player that makes a vital contribution in an unsung role.
Out of respect, LSU paid for Rein's children's college educations at the universities of their choice. Former Ohio State coach Woody Hayes gave the eulogy at Rein's funeral in Niles, Ohio.
In 1980, Niles McKinley High School's famous Riverside Stadium was renamed "Bo Rein Memorial Stadium," in honor of one of Niles' greatest athletes and one of its most famous native sons.

Maybe I had heard what LSU did, but it has certainly slipped my mind. Thanks for the reminder, Mark. Say what you will, but LSU and its adult fans are actually pretty classy. All LSU fans looked forward to finding out what Rein could do for the team, and we were all shocked and saddened by such a tragic end. He probably would have been VERY successful in Baton Rouge.
I find it ironic that his plane left the U.S. mainland while flying over North Carolina. Maybe there is some mystic message in that. His pilot made a common, and fatal error. Don't press on; land and wait it out. Aviation has a term for it ......... "Get-there-itis" ...... and it has killed many people. I have been guilty of it myself, but obviously survived my own stupidity.
Anyway, I hope his survivors have done well in the last 35 years. Wow! Was it really that long ago?

Maybe not. www.buckys5thquarter.com/2015/8/13/9146657/wisconsin-basketball-bo-ryan-retirement-returnPerhaps Bo Ryan isn't quite ready for his swan song. Speaking at a U.S. Venture Open golf charity event in Kaukauna, Wis., Wednesday night, Ryan acknowledged that he's leaving the door open for the possibility of him coaching the Badgers beyond the upcoming 2015-16 season. In June, Ryan announced that he would coach Wisconsin for one more season before retiring. In his statement, he acknowledged his desire for longtime assistant Greg Gard to replace him. Ryan is famously verbose, so his comments should most likely be read as those of a Wisconsin coaching legend who just hasn't decided anything concrete yet. But by acknowledging the possibility of him coaching beyond this season, the 67-year-old Ryan left a very, very enticing door open. "Well, I needed to get a statement out there knowing I wasn't able to tell recruits I could guarantee them four years and I wanted to be fair to our staff and Barry (Alvarez) and the athletic department," said Ryan, who was a guest speaker for the reception-dinner portion of the event at Van Abel's. "Everybody kind of thinks they know when they're ready to retire, or step aside. I'm not totally sure. Barry said I could change my mind at any time. I haven't submitted any papers yet. I haven't submitted anything. As I was telling someone earlier, some of the offers these people made tonight, they made some offers I can't refuse. So I might stay for another four or five. "I just wanted to get it out there that I'm not going to be able to do this forever. But who can say one year? Who can say that? I simply cut to the chase by saying I'll do another year and we'll see what happens in the next number of months. When asked if that meant he's leaving the door open toward returning for more than a final season, Ryan replied: "I am."

Well, Ryan just "Spurriered" his players and AD Barry Alvarez. Quitting during the season is telling the players, AD, and fans he didn't care about them. Did he do it this way just to give his long-time assistant the chance to be HC for a short time? Word is Ryan and Alvarez discussed his retiremant last spring and Ryan said he wanted Gard to succeed him. Alvarez supposedly said he would name the new coach after a thorough search, and that Gard would be considered but Ryan would not be allowed to simply name him the new HC.
