literally a zero risk trade by the 76ers. they acquired last year's 8th overall pick for two late 2nd round draft picks who will never play one second in the nba. as part of the deal, the 76ers have to take on the salaries of carl landry
and jason thompson. even with these two players, the 76ers are still 20 million under the cap this season. and their salaries come off the books at the end of next season. the kings were motivated to do the deal b/c they wanted to shed salary in order to overpay free agents that no one else wanted.
that's not all...the 76ers get the kings (probable) 2018 top 10 protected first round draft pick.
and it gets even better....the 76ers also have the right to swap first round picks with the kings the next two drafts. meaning, if the kings implode or suffer from injuries to demarcus cousins or something and finish with a worst record than the 76ers, the 76ers could swap picks with them for the next two years.
obviously, that's all gravy. but getting stauskas is huge for the 76ers. he is a deadly perimeter shooter who fills an obvious need the 76ers had a guard position. he has good size (6'6). the past two season, the sixers have started d-league caliber players at guard. staruskas had a poor season in sacremento as a rookie, but he was on a dysfunctional team that had a coaching change mid season. george karl benched him after every mistake. karl is a great coach, but needs his own players to do well. in philly, the coaches will focus on his development and he will be given every chance to flourish.
the 76ers currently have nerlins noel, rights to dario saric (top european player under 20), joel embiid, jahil okafor and now stauskas. they will also have 40 million in cap space next year and 4 first round draft picks in next years draft.
