I was a Celtics fan (living in Boston) when Dawkins started playing for the Celtics' arch-rival 76ers. He was a beast-- famous for shattering backboards when he slam-dunked the ball. Even the Chief (Robert Parrish) had trouble boxing out Daryl Dawkins, because the kid was so powerful. I think the league had to re-design the boards to prevent Dawkins from shattering them.

Dawkins was a human being. Of course, OGL. By "beast," I simply meant that he was big and very strong in the paint-- a "Goliath," if you will.

For so long, blacks have struggled to be considered human that it is like a slap in the face. It is not a compliment.

But, FYI, I once heard some NFL player compliment Karl Kecklenburg (former Denver Broncos All-Pro OLB) by saying, "Yeah, Mecklenburg was an animal." It wasn't meant in a derogatory sense, in that instance.
Of course, in the context of American history, you are absolutely correct.

Best tell Marshawn Lynch that his nickname, "Beast Mode", a label that describes his aggressive running style and penchant for breaking tackles, which HE has registered with the gov is inappropriate. Lynch has referred to himself as being in "beast mode" during games. Black/White sports analysts routinely used the term beastly, or some variant, to describe a physical performance. While you may believe the term to be demeaning, Marshawn clearly doesn't. And I doubt many would ascribe to your belief that it is demeaning or, if earned, inappropriate.

Yes, I do believe the term is demeaning. Lynch calls himself a beast and refers to himself as being in beast mode because he is low class and he lacks good sense.
