i thought chip kelly would be a different kind of coach in the nfl. i thought he'd have balls. here's the scenario:
eagles down 26-24 against atlanta. it's a road game in a loud stadium. there's about 3 minutes to go. the eagles have the ball around atlanta's 27. they failed to convert a third and 1, even though they attempted the third and 1 with their back up running back, not their huge free agent demarco murray who was the nfl's best rusher last year. it's now 4th and 1. chip kelly hesitates for a bit and then sends out the field goal unit with about 20 secs left on the play clock. so of course, the eagles kicker is rushed and subsequently misses a field goal he makes about 90% of the time.
chip kelly should have went for it on 4th and 1. he wanted to go for it. that's why you saw the initial hesitation in sending out the field goal unit. but he did what every wussy football coach does. he made a decision that put the blame on the players rather than his coaching decision. too many coaches fear negative backlash for their decisions which is why they make incredibly risk adverse calls all the time. football coaches would rather their players be blamed than themselves. and instead of kelly getting crucified after the game, eagles kicker cody parkey took the brunt of the blame by fans. it was generally accepted that kelly made the correct decision to go for the points.
even if parkey made the rushed fg, atlanta still has 3 minutes to get 3 points. and atlanta's offense was really good most of the game. and atlanta's fg kicker matt bryant is excellent. if the eagles convert on fourth and 1, they were in good position to score a td, force atlanta to have to score a td and take valuable time off the clock. and remember, the eagles now have demarco murray. is there any other nfl RB you'd rather have for a 4 and 1?
you let me down chip. you are supposed to be above these wussy decisions. you're just like every other coach though. afraid to take a risk even though taking the risk would have put your team in a better position to win. you'd rather your kicker get scrutinized than your own decisions.

Well, it was good to see the Stalers and the Iggles lose in opening week. Sort of like sweeping a double header. Then Seattle losing made it like a threepeat.

Or the Eagles settle for a field goal anyway, but with less time on the clock for atlanta to respond, with the FG being a bit closer. you have demarco murrary. you're chip kelly, who has developed this reputation around football as being innovative and unconventional. yet you do what every other lame coach does in the situation. it's disappointing. how bout tevin coleman. i knew he was very underrated in college but i didn't think he would be this good. he def looks like a nfl starter to me.

I haven't spun down the posts but a cpl of things. No guar he makes it anyway, no guar they make the td, no guar Atl scores if they kick the FG. But your point is well made in that he did come into the league as a guy who rolls the dice, so it was a bit out of character. I guess he should of kept TT. And if he ends up 1 game short he may have wished he had.

I didn't see the game, IHS, but I would have kicked the FG from the 27 for the win. Certainly a greater chance of success than converting a 4th-and-1 in a noisy stadium-- especially since the Eagles had just failed to convert a 3rd-and-1.
IMO, it's unfair to blame Chip Kelly for that particular call.

it's unfair for fans to blame cody parkey for missing the FG when he was rushed to get on the field. the FG from the 27 wasn't for the win. It was to take a lead with 3 minutes left, which is an eternity in football.
