Well they do generate results, going back to the old days. Babe, Lou, Ted, Ty & Stan from the old days to name a few. I once saw an article that suggest for 50 yrs ending in 2007, out of 100 batting titles, 54 were won by Ls, 35 Rs and 11 who swing both ways (Ah wait, I mean bat from both sides of the plate ). Given they are a much lower % of the BB population that a sig result. Most pitchers are still R I'd guess so they see the ball better and can develop a more free flow aggressive swing. 11 switch hitters won batting titles... hmm, my interest is piqued. I am going to look it up but off the top of my head, I would say these guys probably were in that group: Rose Mays Mantle Willie McGee Bernie Williams Chipper had one ridiculous year, too as I recall I am drawing a blank on the others. 11, huh? Never would have guessed. I'll have to look it up or find the article. And certainly I may have remembered it wrong.

Greg Maddux agrees. maddux may agree on the art of pitching, but he and glavine REALLY agree on one other thing... LOL...good ad. Had never seen that one.

It has actually been done 12 times amongst 9 guys, none of which were RH-hitting Willie Mays (LOL, oops): Mantle Rose (3 times) Willie Wilson Tim Raines Willie McGee (twice, one in each league) Terry Pendleton Bernie Williams Bill Meuller Chipper Jones I never would have remembered Bill Meuller... wow. And I forgot about the other Willie who was more known for his stolen bases than anything. Raines was part of that core in Montreal that all went on to great careers elsewhere. Good stuff! Thanks, good stuff. Notables not on the list but great switch hitters. Eddie Murray, Roberto Alomar,

Murray was at the tail end of his career, but still had some pop in his bat. Robbie was still on his game... One of the best ever at 2b. A 5 tooler.

Eddie Murray, Roberto Alomar, Eddie was steady (Steady Eddie?) in most hitting categories but I never would have thought he would have had the average to win a batting title. Alomar I would have thought may have at one point with the Tribe. Good call on that one.

Royals baseball is not good foxy heart. Five hours, fourteen innings and a one run game. Little fuzzy, can't quite make out the QRS complex. <g>

If my memory is correct, I think the year Willie Wilson won the batting title he became the only player in history to pick up 100 base hits from both sides of the plate.

Just goes to show you that there's more than a throwing it 100 mph. It still is a fine art. Angles, release points, movement. Greg Maddux agrees. Saw Chris Young interview after the game. He said he would be happy to throw 95 if he could. Last night was the first time he's hit 90 in a few years. And yes, being 6'10" tall with long arms I am sure gives the ball a totally different appearance approaching the plate. I believe I have also heard that he gets more rpms on his off speed stuff than anyone else currently in the major leagues. I don't think, from listening to him, that he even knows if that hard breaker he has is a slider or a cutter. I am sure last night was special for him, too, as he lost his dad just about a month ago and then picking up Eddie last night finding out his dad died right before the game. Nobody seems to know for sure if Volquez knew about it or not during the game.
