No surprise there IMHO. The commish said that rose lied about when he starts betting on baseball back in the 80s-shocking-, that the medical 'conditions' rose trumpeted as contributing to his issues in his '04 book? Well rose never followed thru in getting treatment. Again, I'm completely shocked. Finally, rose has never stopped betting, including on baseball, something he initially lied about to mangled himself before changing his story and admitting he still bets on sports, including baseball
Pete continues to say whatever he thinks will position himself the best for the hof in his mind, without changing one damn thing about his life. And he thinks baseball is going to change its mind about him? Mathis all just really-emphasizes the kind of guy he was before, and continues to be to this day. Are his stats hof worthy? Of course. And there are plenty of ne'er do wells in Cooperstown. But rule 21 is plain and simple fm the moment you step onto a class a diamond on thru to the bigs. Rose knew it, and put himself above the game. He's had to live with tha fact, and you'd think man frees ruling would mean rose will die with that fact too.

It's a shame when he finally decided to come clean that he didn't actually come clean. This could have been over long ago but as you say, Mark... he would rather talk the talk than walk the walk.
He deserves to be in but the latest revelation about him betting on the Reds is the nail in the proverbial coffin for him. And he has no one to blame but himself.

His ACCOMPLISHMENTS on the field deserve to be represented...maybe after he passes, a plaque noting his numbers should be put on a wall in Cooperstown....but not while he's alive. Shoeless Joe Jackson deserves to be in the HOF more than, and before, Pete Rose, IMO...

And even though he broke the one rule you can't break, had he just be honest when he was caught, I honestly believe he would be in. Unfortunately the number of lies is as impressive as his hit total. No argument on Jackson, either. Him not being in given all of the evidence is a crime (no pun intended).

Jackson's story is really pretty fascinating, I think...depending on which way you believe; Based on his performance, if I was a betting man...

I was at the game when Gene Garber struck out Rose in the 9th inning to end the game and his 44 game hitting streak. Garber gave him 3 fastballs, then threw a 2 strike change-up to get the out. After the game Rose was all snotty about the pitch and said Garber was afraid to throw him another fastball. Garber laughed and said he'll throw him change-ups the rest of the season.
