national.suntimes.com/national-sports/7/72/2681426/jj-redick-white-duke-villain/now this one made me laugh. jj redick, who played at duke and now plays for the clippers in la, said on his podcast this week that the media is unfairly picking on duke, seeking out 'white villains'. this after current duke player grayson allen, for the 2nd time in about 3 weeks, intentionally stuck his leg out to trip an opposing player as that player was running by allen. first, the concept of 'negative media attention' connection to any action by coach k's program is novel in and of itself. the coverage has been so universally positive down thru the last 25 years, the last time anyone had even a passing bad thought, dick vitale had a head full of hair. 2nd, think of the players down thru the years, like redick himself, obviously laettner, who've had no problem living in the gray area of the rules and more than occasionally crossing even that line, with elbows, hip checks, and no shortage of 'look at me' antics.. i sure do remember some unc players (eric montross, tyler hansborough) being on the wrong end of a couple elbows and having the blood to prove it. and that's regardless of race. coach k's teams play chippy. always have, still do. they're usually really good too. the likability most have with the coach in admiration of his success and how he's achieved it at duke, after playing at army under bobby knight, has always overshadowed that. but a claim that the media picks out white players and says 'hate them'? no. pointing out dirty plays? and connecting it to a history of other players there who acted in similar fashion? imho fair game.
