Watched a great game last night...
And then sadness overcame me as I began to realize just how far below "good" my Lakers have fallen. They are so away from being competitive with the likes of those two teams, it's not even worth worrying ping-pong balls and the draft. It won't matter.

It won't matter. the spurs may be not just the most underrated nba team, but the most underrated pro sports franchise in history. ask hoops fan which teams have the most nba titles, and just about everyone would have the celtics and lakers in the top 2 (boston 17, la/minneapolis 16). #3 might be a little dicey, but the bulls' 6, all in the last couple decades, would be the answer. guess who is #4 all time? ALL TIME??? it would be the spurs... with 5, all since '99. and not a lot of folks outside texas, hell, outside san antonio, would get that right.

They just go about their business, and are always near the top. Popovich arguably is the best NBA coach/GM EVER. Heard a story about Tim Duncan being absolutely horrified at the idea of a Kobe style retirement circus year, and wanted no part of it. Said he would play his last year, whenever that was, and then just stop playing, and likely wouldn't even announce it....just tell Pop, that's it, and walk away..... No hoopla... No interviews....Nothing.... In that way, he is the quintessential San Antonio Spur.

Not sure that red auerbach doesn't hold that distinction of best coach/gm in history but pop sure is on the top shelf.

Here's something along the same lines I posted about the Spurs two years ago.* As I recall, the Spurs were a good franchise after acquiring David Robinson out of the Naval Academy. Then they became a GREAT franchise after they signed Tim Duncan. It would be difficult to name two championship caliber big men in NBA history who have been more humble and soft spoken than Robinson and Duncan-- Robert "the Chief" Parrish comes to mind.* Jun 1, 2014 11:42:29 GMT -6 @williewunderlich said: Nothing against the Thunder, but the San Antonio Spurs remain my favorite NBA team in the 21st century. Is there a more generally underrated pro sports franchise than the San Antonio Spurs? They certainly don't get the hype, considering how well they play ball year after year. I may watch the Spurs' rematch with Miami in this year's championship series, if I can stomach the officiating.

Auerbach coached in a different era, not unlike our arguments about "the modern era" of college football, but from a pure record perspective, I agree, he's probably got a lock on "the best". Here's a bit of NBA trivia to chew on in that regard. In the entire history of the NBA draft, the Boston Celtics have never had the first pick.

Hooray Congrats to the Thunder. This could be a changing of the guard-- Durant asserting himself and Tim Duncan retiring.
It reminds me of the transition from Detroit (Isaiah Thomas, Joe Dumars, John Sally, Lambeer, et.al.) beating the Chicago Bulls year after year, until Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen finally turned the tide and starting winning all of those titles.
Of course, Golden State is a formidable team for the Thunder to face in the Western Finals.

Roberson is a helluva player. Yes, Warriors will be tough, but that is the way it goes. P.S. I hope Durant opts to stay in Oklahoma City. He is much loved for his character as well as his playing ability.
