Well, we had Week 1, and it delivered. We all thought Week 2 would be a stinker, and it actually came through with some very compelling games, although I'm still fuming at the Ducks allowing a back door cover to freakin' Virginia. Sonsabitches...
Here's the quote. A long one, but a good one. A hint...it ain't a comedy.
"Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country. Men, all this stuff you’ve heard about America not wanting to fight, wanting to stay out of the war, is a lot of horse dung. Americans traditionally love to fight. All real Americans love the sting of battle. When you were kids, you all admired the champion marble shooter, the fastest runner, the big league ball player, the toughest boxer. Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser. Americans play to win all the time. I wouldn’t give a hoot in hell for a man who lost and laughed. That’s why Americans have never lost and will never lose a war. Because the very thought of losing is hateful to Americans.
Now, an Army is a team. It lives, eats, sleeps, fights as a team. This individuality stuff is a bunch of crap. The bilious bastards who wrote that stuff about individuality for the Saturday Evening Post don’t know anything more about real battle than they do about fornicating.
We have the finest food and equipment, the best spirit and the best men in the world. You know, by God I actually pity those poor bastards we’re going up against. By God, I do. We’re not just going to shoot the bastards, we’re going to cut out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We’re going to murder those lousy Hun bastards by the bushel.
Now, some of you boys, I know, are wondering whether or not you'll chicken out under fire. Don't worry about it. I can assure you that you will all do your duty. The Nazis are the enemy. Wade into them. Spill their blood. Shoot them in the belly. When you put your hand into a bunch of goo that a moment before was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do.
Now there’s another thing I want you to remember. I don’t want to get any messages saying that we are holding our position. We’re not holding anything. Let the Hun do that. We are advancing constantly and we’re not interested in holding onto anything except the enemy. We're going to hold onto him by the nose and we're going to kick him in the ass. We're going to kick the hell out of him all the time and we're gonna go through him like crap through a goose.
There’s one thing that you men will be able to say when you get back home. And you may thank God for it. Thirty years from now when you’re sitting around your fireside with your grandson on your knee and he asks you what did you do in the great World War II, you won’t have to say..."
Fourteen pretty good games on the slate...
THURSDAY GAME
Houston -7 1/2 @ Cincinnati. The Bearcats parlayed 5 Boilermaker turnovers to get a road win against lowly Purdue, 38-20. But now the big dogs are coming to town. Houston upset Lamar 42-0 in a game that was closer than the score indicated. The Cardinals had 73 yards total. Houston didn't cover the 43 1/2 point spread. Thursday night, all eyes on them, do they go on the road and cover? Yep...in my humble opinion. Granted, I'm -1 on the year, so what do I know? Cougars
SATURDAY GAMES
Florida State -3 @ Louisville. Arguably the biggest game of the weekend less than two weeks after FSU played in arguably the biggest game of the weekend. Noles looked a little sloppy despite winning 52-8. Also although reports are that the injury to Derwin James aren't season-ending, sounding more like he's out for this game. Doesn't bode well against Lamar Jackson and his running ability. Still, although the Cardinals have put up Tecmo Bowl kinds of numbers, the defenses they've gone against are suspect. FSU's defense is a mighty big step up. Louisville gave up some points to Syracuse, and FSU's offense is a different animal entirely. I expect a good game, and you know me...I'm taking the Noles.
Miami -4 1/2 @ Appalachian State. Yes sports fans, you read that right...the Hurricanes are going on the road to play in Boone, NC. Make no mistake, the Mountaineers are a solid, well coached team. Taking Tennessee to overtime in their house is proof of that. But I think that game actually hurts Appy State in this one. The Hurricanes won't be overlooking them. After watching some of the game against FAU, I am still completely unimpressed with Miami. They should be better than they show. I'm going to ride with Miami here, but only because I can see them winning by a touchdown late...not because they blow anyone off the field.
Vandy +6 1/2 @ Georgia Tech. Well, after laying an egg against South Carolina in week 1, turns out Vandy found some offense in winning against a decent Middle Tennessee team, 47-24. However, they were outgained in that game by 150 yards, mostly by the arm of the Blue Raider quarterback, Stockstill. Kid passed for 400 yards. The problem is that GT doesn't throw it. GT has a big matchup when Clemson comes to town next week. Are they looking ahead? Vandy defends the run pretty well. I'll take the Commodores.
Oregon +3 @ Nebraska. The Ducks versus the Cornholes. The Huskers had a pretty tight game against Wyoming until they blew it open in the 4th quarter. The Ducks were manhandling Virginia until they allowed a backdoor cover. Sonsabitches. I don't see Nebraska being as strong as Oregon, but I don't see Oregon as world beaters either. Oregon seems to have the faster start, and I think they get up big enough early to where Nebraska makes several mistakes trying to make a comeback. Rubber Duckies.
Alabama -10 @ Ole Miss. The Tide looked a bit out of sync the first few possessions last week before they out athleted Western Kentucky en route to winning 38-10. Ole Miss rebounded after their second half drubbing at the hands of FSU to beat Wofford handily. I'm still not sold that Alabama can throw consistently well, but that's ok because the secondary from Ole Miss is questionable and lost a couple of their vets to injury. Plus giving me the revenge factor and I don't see Mississippi keeping this one close enough. My heart hopes the Rebels look good, but I don't think it is going to happen. Tide.
Pitt +6 1/2 @ Oklahoma State. Can anyone say emotional hangover? Pitt won a wild rivalry game over Penn State when they intercepted a late 4th quarter Nittany Lion pass in the end zone. Oklahoma State lost when they couldn't intercept a last second Hail Mary that was lateraled and run in for a touchdown on a play which never should have happened. Emotional high v. emotional low. I honestly have no idea, but I like Pitt to play well again. They are solid all around. Panthers.
Michigan State +7 1/2 @ Notre Dame. So lemme get this straight....a team ranked #12 is getting more than a touchdown against a team ranked #18 and has a loss? Hmmm...and he line has jumped from +6 to boot. Michigan State has played one game so far this year....a 28-13 pedestrian outing against lowly Furman. That line is begging for a MSU pick...especially with that half point. But I'm going to go against the grain here. I think MSU is in for a rude awakening, and ND is going to play with their hair on fire. Domers.
USC +8 1/2 @ Stanford. For the third time in as many weeks, USC is on the list. I threw them on there last week to see how they'd rebound against Utah State. They answered the bell and beat the hell out of the Aggies. Now they're facing an altogether different animal in Stanford. The Tree is quietly in the top ten, with its only game where they dispatched a feisty K State team, 26-13. Stanford has won 6 of the last 8, and even in the two losses, they've been tight games. I think Stanford is the better team, but 8 1/2 is a bunch...but I'll lay the points. Stanford.
Texas -7 1/2 @ Cal. I don't fully understand why Texas is ranked so high. Yes, great win against Notre Dame at home in overtime. But #11??? Seems a bit high to me..but they have kids who can play, and they are undoubtedly playing with a lot of confidence. Despite the 1-1 record, Cal isn't a bad football team. They gathered over 600 yards in a loss to San Diego State last week. Four turnovers didn't do them any favors. I said to hell with the half point on an earlier game. I love it here. Cal.
Ohio State -1 1/2 @ Oklahoma. The other heavyweight matchup on the card other than FSU/Louisville, the Buckeyes roll into town after scoring 125 points in their first 2 games. The luster of this one tarnished a bit when Oklahoma was beaten by Houston, but rebounded nicely in dispatching Louisiana-Monroe, 59-17. The score was 42-0 at halftime. Pretty damned good. Ohio State did beat Tulsa 48-3, but a look beyond that shows that until a pick 6 right before halftime, the score was 13-3 and the Buckeyes were in a tussle. Urbs is pretty good in games like these, and the spread looks about right. Flip a coin as far as I can tell. Chastity....where are you? Buckeyes.
Colorado +20 1/2 @ Michigan. Why is this game on the list? Because the spread is huge and Colorado is 2-0, outscoring their opponents 100-14. And the Buffs are averaging 588 yards of offense per game. Yes, I understand the opponents were Colorado State and Idaho State. But that's still impressive. Sure, I think Michigan wins...but I like the Buffaloes to sneak a backdoor cover!!!
UCLA -3 1/2 @ BYU. Our other 3 out of 3 participant, the Cougars are on the list again, this time at home against the Bruins. BYU could conceivably be 2-0, alas, a 2 point conversion in the Holy War came up short. Apparently, God doesn't like Mormoms. Utah had 6, count them, 6 turnovers. That's usually enough to earn you a loss. The fact that they won says a little bit about BYU, who needed a solid performance to outlast Arizona, who isn't real good. UCLA.
Texas A&M +3 1/2 @ Auburn. Our last game on the list, the Aggies are getting more than a field goal as they go on the Plains to duke it out with the Tigers. The Tigers defense looked pretty good against Clemson, and then Clemson went out and struggled with Troy. We learned nothing from TAMU after their big UCLA win when they destroyed Prarie View 123,423 to 0. Another ranked dog getting points on the road. That half point is, once again, enticing. I like TAMU's defense getting after Sean White and TAMU wins a squeaker. Aggies.
Alright now, you sons-of-bitches, you know how I feel. Oh, and I will be proud to lead you wonderful guys into battle – anytime, anywhere.
That’s all.
