With all that money, and their massive recruiting base in the Lone Star State, there's no excuse for Longhorn mediocrity in football.
The Sooners have always recruited well in Texas, as I recall. But, are Art Briles and Gary Patterson beating Texas to the punch in Texas high school recruitment lately?

Charlie Strong was a good recruiter of Florida kids when he was at Louisville. Strong doesn't have the same relationships with Texas high schools and their coaches. At least that is what the experts say. Texas is a fertile recruiting ground for Oklahoma as well as Oklahoma State.

A physician friend of mine from OU used to drive down to the Red River Shootout with his friends in an old van called "The Rolling Tombstone."

Texas A&M has been the top recruiting school in Texas since it has joined the SEC. It's no accident that the aggies are a top 10 team. I hope they prove it today in a top 10 matchup against Tennessee in College Station. With all due respect to the Red River Rivalry, it's by far the biggest game in the southwest this weekend.
Charlie Strong is an excellent football coach. It does take time to build the relationships in Texas, but he won't be given the time to do it. You can tell that Strong has the team back on the rise, but that won't matter. The folks that didn't want him hired in the first place won't let the chance go by to get rid of him. IMO, Strong will get another chance somewhere and soon.
Edit: Just saw on GameDay that Strong has demoted DC Vance Bedford and will make the D calls himself today against the sooners. If he has the D players, he'll get the most out of them today. When I said he has the shorthorns on the rise, he has the offense scoring like a pin ball machine along with 2 good QBs. Charlie is an excellent D coach so what has been happening with the D this season is inexcusable in his book along with the Texas sharks that want to eat him alive.

'you can tell strong has the team back on the rise'... lmao. his defense has allowed 47, 50 and 49 points to the 3 power 5/major independent opponents texas has faced so far this year. last year texas allowed 38+ 5 times. in 2+ years in austin texas is 13-16. on the rise? it's exactly the opposite... texas is actually declining when it comes to results. they lost to cal and to oklahoma state. you may like the guy, but there is nothing that shows he is rebuilding texas into a major cfb player yet.

He booted a bunch of players that didn't want to play for him from game 1. It has hurt in recruiting. That's why it takes time to build relationships. As I said, Strong is best at defense whether you think so or not. His offense is what he has turned around. I'm so confident that Strong will get the shorthorns to play well today that I changed my pick from Oklahoma to Texas this morning. Texas might not win, but I like the game to be closer than the spread. I put my pick where my mouth is.

I hate to be so blunt about a difficult situation, no easy way to say this, but Charlie Strong is a black Bob Stoops at a racist Texas. Big-time Texas boosters have been after Charlie Strong since the day he was hired and were vocally opposed to him before he was hired. Oklahoma would be doing itself a favor to break away from that turd of a program in Austin.

Have to say that I was very surprised that he took the job in the first place. As I've said before my preference would be for OU and UT to go their separate ways. I much preferred the rivalry when we were in different conferences.
